Tonawanda is a village located in the Town of Tonawanda, within Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was first settled by Germans in 1814. In 1829-1830, it was abandoned and burned by the Erie Canal company because it refused to sell land for canal construction. In 1830-1831, it was founded as a town by settlers from Germany who were seeking to avoid taxes levied on their villages in that region. The name "Tonawanda" comes from the Seneca word "tanawa." In 1836-1837, it became the capital of what would become Niagara County when Buffalo and its surrounding counties were merged into that county. In 1860-1861, Tonawanda joined with other towns in northeast New York to form the new Town of Rome (later renamed Canastota) due to political differences over whether or not to allow an independent school district within Rome's boundaries. On March 15, 1889, Tonawanda became one of fifteen municipalities consolidated into Niagara County when Buffalo and its surrounding counties were reorganized under state government following the American Civil War. On December 17th 1951, Tonawanda withdrew from Niagara County and incorporated as a separate Village pursuant to article XVIII of the Local Government Law Of New York State (ANSI Z39.50). As such -Tonawandans enjoy all local government services associated with Village status which include: zoning regulations; election procedures; assessor/collector functions; public works programs; tax assessment; finance authority; and ambulance service

Today, Tonawanda is a vibrant community with a rich history that has left its mark on both the local economy and American culture. The first settlers in what is now Tonawanda were likely farmers who arrived during the early stages of European exploration of what is now upstate New York. Over time, these pioneers developed a thriving commercial industry based on trade with neighboring states and Europe. By 1800, when Tonawanda was established as an incorporated village, it had become one of the most important economic centers in western New York County. During the early years of the 19th century,Tonawanda experienced dramatic growth due to increasing population density and new transportation options such as railroads and canals. By 1834,the town had reached its current size thanks to strong business climate and several construction projects led by Mayor John Fenton. This period also saw major cultural changes in Tonawanda thanks to new immigrants from Germany, Italy, Poland, Denmark (later Norway), Sweden (later America) and Spain who came to live among their fellow Americans. In addition to its growing economy, Toneawa also enjoyed significant political clout due to its location within Western New York County - home to most significant towns in central New York state at that time. This allowed Toneawa mayor John Fenton To play an leading role in developing statewide policies affecting many aspects of life in central New York including education, social welfare programs and land reform. Despite this impressive record over a sustained period of time - including two terms as mayor -Fenton lost his bid for reelection in 1860 amid heavy Republican Party opposition across much of WesternNewYork county due to development pressures within his own party HQ located further east near Buffalo City Hall which would soon become Buffalo proper). Despite this setback however;Fenton continues play an influential role within local politics up through 1870 when he moves back into town permanently following his death at age 80 years old . He is buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery next door where today’s residents enjoy access while still keeping some distance from city living norms

The town's population peaked at around 10,000 in 1907 but declined after World War I due to forced migration from rural to urban areas. It regained some of its former prosperity during the late 20th century through various industrial ventures and tourism initiatives. Today, Tonawanda remains a quiet community with a strong farming tradition and active local economy.
