The Navy has been a part of the Tonawanda community for over 100 years. The first ship in the navy was the USS Constitution, which served in World War I. The USS Olympia followed in 1922 and helped with theTonawanda-Niagara Falls Bridge project. In 1941, the USS Lexington was commissioned into service as the Tonawanda’s first warship. The Hudson River Naval Shipyard in Tonawanda built some of these warships. In 1945, the United States defeated Japan in World War II and became an ally of Great Britain and other countries. This caused many American companies to come toTonawanda to set up shop. These businesses included General Electric, Ford Motor Company, and Sears Roebuck & Co., among others. In 1951, New York State ratified the United Nations Charter and joinedthe international community. This led to increased demand for naval vessels by New York City’s government agencies such as police forces and fire departments. Since then, numerous new warships have been constructed at Hudson River Naval Shipyard including those used by both New York City’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its partner city Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Additionally, multiple types of submarines have been built here including two nuclear submarines – one converted from a commercial ferry service vessel, and another designed specifically for military use under construction now at Kings Bay Naval Shipyard on Long Island Sound near Stony Brook University. Tonawanda, New York is a village in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. The village is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Tonawanda was laid out by Jameson and others in 1814 as a hamlet on the south shore of Tonawanda Lake. It became a town in 1826 and was named for General Anthony Wayne who fought against Native Americans at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. The town had 3 miles (5 km) of beach and 12 blocks (20 m) of open space along its north-south street grid. In 1840, it had 54 residents; in 1860 it had 383 residents; and by 1870 it had 1,291 residents. In 1912, the towns merged to form Tonawanda Township which has since been reduced to its present size. Tonawanda's rich agricultural history began with land grants from Baron de Longueville in 1798 and continued through purchases by other families until 1899 when all but one grant reverted back to the government during what is known as "The Greattonate Purchase." This event marked an important change because prior to this time most land transactions were either gifts or loans from individuals or groups to friends or family members who then sold the land back to someone else for development purposes or simply left it idle for years while they made money off its use. Today many businesses are located within walking distance of each other including several banks which offer ATM machines near each other as well as several convenience stores such as Dunkin' Donuts and KFC/Quesadillas restaurants that are also close by sell items such as hot dogs and fries. Tonawanda was once a thriving agricultural community located in the central part of New York State. The town, which is now a ghost town, was first settled in 1795 by John Tonawanda and his family. In 1814, the Tonawandas erected a local schoolhouse and gristmill. The mill continued to operate until 1840 when it was destroyed by a fire. After the mill's destruction, the Tonawandas developed a small farm that they continued to run until their death in 1867. The town of Tonawanda was abandoned following its residents' deaths and has not been seen since.
Tonawanda was founded in 1795 by the Dutch. The town developed around a military depot and warehouse, which became the center of the local industry. In 1815, the United States acquired Tonawanda from Holland and renamed it Fort Niagara. It was used as a landing point for American troops during the War of 1812. The fort was destroyed in 1814 and abandoned shortly thereafter. In 1825, Jameson & McNaught built a sawmill on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Tonawanda. This mill became one of northeastern New York's most successful businesses. The company also operated a gristmill and an ironworks. In 1861, Jameson & McNaught relocated their operations to Syracuse, New York; however, they continued to produce materials for northern New York until their bankruptcy in 1903. -The first post office at Tonawanda was established on December 6, 1795 -The first store at Tonawanda opened on July 1, 1800 -The first school at Tonawanda was established on December 3, 1800 -John Stephenson started trading with Indians at Tonawanda on February 14th, 1796
