The first National Guard unit was organized on October 4, 1776, when Patriot soldiers from the town of Tonawanda led by Colonel John Armstrong volunteered to serve in the Continental Army. It was not until after the Revolution that national guard units were organized at a regional level throughout New York State. In 1781, Governor George Clinton ordered all militia units in the state to be mustered into service for three years as part of an effort to prepare for war with Great Britain. Between 1785 and 1800, Militia Units numbering 1,500 men were levied and trained under command of Brigadier General James Ketchum at Albion barracks east of Buffalo. In 1802 Militia Units numbered 3,000 men were levied and trained under command of Major General Israel Putnam at Kingston barracks near Schenectady. In 1803 Militia Units numbered 2,500 men were levied and trained under command of Major General Amos Kendall at Auburn barracks east of Utica. On October 4th, 1776 Colonel John Armstrong led a detachment from Tonawandatowne (now part of Niagara Falls) against British forces camped on Hiawatha Lake near present-day Canandaigua. After skirmishing for several hours Armstrong's force column marched northwestward towards Oswego where they joined up with other patriot forces marching south from Syracuse towards Albany . On November 5th Sir George Clinton arrived in White Plains with his army and made his way northeast along Mohawk River valley towards Lake Ontario . By November 8th Clinton's army had reached Kingston where they encampment was located before marching southeast over snow covered peaks towards Amherstburg . Canadian Forces Private Peter Weir who later became a United States Senator recalled seeing Royal militiamen sleeping on logs outside Kingston barracks during this time: "One night I saw two or three detachments [of Loyalists] stretched across the rough ground around our quarters; they looked like angels playing cards." It is generally accepted that betweenNovember8-10th two thousand militiamen served in Canada serving under American Command while also undertaking military exercises within their respective states

Tonawanda (population: 36,000) is a small town in upstate New York, about 20 miles northwest of Syracuse. It is the seat of Tonawanda County and lies within the borders of the Finger Lakes region. The land that makes up Tonawanda was first settled by the Seneca Nation in the 17th century. After American independence, settlers from New England arrived and developed a farming economy. In 1814, an act of Congress designated Tonawanda as a congressional surveyed district. The town became a village in 1835 and was incorporated as a city in 1905. The population of Tonawanda peaked at over 100,000 in 1960 but has since declined slightly to around 36,000 today. The downtown area is home to two universities- One local, SUNY Buffalo; and one national university- Fordham University which is located adjacent to the Townsquare Mall on Route 9A across from downtown. The active summertime tourist destination forTonawanda residents is Niagara Falls which lies just east of town on Ontario County Road 515 south of Interstate Highway NY 10W exit 217A. A third stop for visitors is Cornwall Hills State Park located east of town on CR 470 south near SR 824 eastbound access road for military vehicles only off State Route 822 north between I-290 Exit 248B and SR 825 westbound access road for all other traffic only off NY 10W exit 218A close to US 11 West exits from Canada border

Tonawanda is a village in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "place of two hills" in the Mohawk language. The first settlers to Tonawanda were farmers and their families who arrived around 1795. By 1815, there were about 25 families living here. By 1830, there were over 100 people here and by 1840, there were more than 500 residents. In 1845, the Post Office was established in Tonawanda and it remained in operation until 1959. In 1814-1815 Major General George Armstrong Custer led an invasion of northern Ontario from the western theater of operations during the War of 1812 against Native American forces led by Chief Tecumseh and his brother-in-law Black Hawk. As part of this campaign he reached into upstate New York where he joined forces with militia leader John Purdy to attack a detachment of Native Americans on November 14th nearpresent-day Tonawanda village site (then known as Easton). A number of Iroquois warriors including Onondaga Chief Uncas fought alongside Custer and lost many life before they finally withdrew to their villages while Custer took prisoners back to civilization at Fort Erie on Lake Erie aboard his horse "Haviland". On July 8th 1861 both houses of Congress passed resolutions condemning secession actions taken by South Carolina and Texas; these resolutions had been brought forward by Representative David Wilmot after Charleston's slave market riots which had occurred one week earlier on May 12th 1861 following a meeting between Confederate President Jefferson Davis and delegates from 10 southern states that included Virginia's Richmond Convention Sons Of Liberty." After issuing a proclamation ordering all Unionists within 1 mile (2 km)of any state capital to leave for fear they would join Confederate forces if they did not do so), Lincoln called for martial law throughout all Ulysses S. Grant's territory following the passage of Andrew Johnson's Emancipation Proclamation on April 12th 1865 which ended slavery in all but nine states north of Arkansas along the Potomac River
