Tonawanda, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name came from an Iroquois word meaning "the place where Tonawanda Creek flows." The first Europeans to visit this area were the Dutch in 1624 and 1625. George Washington's half brother, Colonel John Smithy, explored this area in 1776 during his march on Niagara Falls. In 1802, General Josiah Harmar founded the village of Tonawanda on what is now the eastern edge of Tonawanda Township. In 1854–55, when Buffalo and Niagara Falls were consolidated into one city under the name of Buffalo–Niagara Falls, Tonawanda was annexed into that city as well. The post office at Tonawanda was established in 1857 and remained operational until it merged with nearby Brockport in 1899. The present day town of Tonawanda was organized on April 12, 1898 by act of the New York State Legislature from portions of Brockport and Rometown Townships. It included all or part of present-day Rometown (now an unincorporated community), Ashtabula County (now Steuben County), Erie County (now Genesee County), and parts of Tioga and Wyoming Counties (now Mahoning County). On July 8, 1909 a fire destroyed most of the original town center following a series of arson fires across western New York City caused by vandals angered over high school tuition rates being raised there by then-Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia It reopened on July 10 under new leadership including Unitarian minister Charles Winton who had been elected as mayor after helping to save much needed funds for rebuild efforts A new central library branch opened November 9th 1914 which served as both a model for many other public libraries throughout western New York City before being replaced by its current facility located just east off I-787 near Utica Avenue in 2013 In 1925 it became known as "Tonawandatown" when local businesses began making use thereof

In the year 1814, General James Wilkinson was named commander of the Western Department. He soon realized that the Tonawanda Valley was an ideal place to build a military post. He obtained land from the town of Tonawanda and founded what is now known as Fort Niagara on the banks of the Onondaga River in upstate New York. The fort served as a base for military operations in central New York and it also became a center for trade and culture. In 1825, Wilkinson decided to move his post further upriver and he renamed it Fort Niagara State Park. The development of Buffalo Bayou made life difficult for soldiers stationed at Fort Niagara. They needed access to fresh water but they also needed to avoid flooding during times of high water. In 1836, Wilkinson authorized construction of a millrace that would allow mills downstream fromFort Niagara to produce flour for local consumption. This millrace is still in use today and it helps provide drinking water for nearby communities. In 1845, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Fort Niagara State Park and he was impressed by its natural beauty. He ordered new fortifications be constructed along the river banks and he also began plans to make Fort Niagara into one of America’s largest arsenal systems. After years of planning, construction finally began in 1865 andFort Niagara National Monument was completed just two years later! The fort has been preserved as a museum since its inception and it now offers visitors an interesting perspective on American history!

Tonawanda's growth during this time was due to its location as a transportation and communication center for surrounding rural areas. In 1847,Tonawanda became part of the United States when it was acquired by New York state. The town continued to grow through the years until it reached its peak in 1959 with a population of around 60,000 people. After declining over the next few decades, Tonawanda's population has slowly begun to decline again over recent years. Today, most residents ofTonawanda are engaged in agriculture or fishing.
