Tonawanda, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by the towns of Buffalo and Niagara Falls to the north, Canandaigua to the east, and Elma to the south. The first permanent settler in what is now Tonawanda was George Washington; he and his family arrived there on July 12, 1792. It was not until 1834 that Buffalo Bill's Wild West show operated out of Tonawanda for three seasons. The show brought people from all over upstate New York together for an exciting evening of entertainment. Afterward, many people who had seen it went back home to begin construction of their homes in this area which began near present-day Main Street and Fifth Avenue. In 1875–76 a group of men from Buffalo came up with the idea of forming a small town here as an agricultural center because they found no easy way to get transportation into or out of Tonawanda Creek without traveling throughNiagara Falls. They named their new town after General Anthony Wayne who had won fame at Battle of Fallen Timbers during the American Revolution. A post office called "Tonawanda" was established in 1877, but it never caught on and closed two years later. In 1899 a railroad line reached Tonawanda from Niagara Falls via Canandaigua and then down Eighth Avenue (now First Street) into what is now downtown Tonawanda before terminating at Scranton Railroad Station southeast of downtown in 1903. The educational wing began operations here when a school board member recommended building one in1887 due to lack of other places for students in upstate New York after western Pennsylvania became part of America following its purchase by Canada during the Mexican War This school remained open until 1915 when it merged with another nearby school district which also housed government buildings used by both local politicians and military officers during World War I . With help from prominent citizens like Henry Griggs Sr., president pro tempore (1915–1920), education continued onward under Drs John Fenton (1920–1939) and Harry Wexler (1939–1968). In 1945 four-year old Milton Herschel opened his first store - Herschel's Shoes - in what is now Third Street south central business district For almost fifty years since then local businesses have been located along Third Street between Central Park South/Washington Blvd./Appleton Rd./Herschel Rd .. The area was part of the Susquehanna River Valley and was very rural at that time. But over time, farmers and traders developed a strong economy based on agriculture, trade, and manufacturing. The population grew rapidly during the 18th century as new settlers came to the area. In 1784, Jameson Bagley purchased land in present-day Tonawanda from the Lenape people for $3 per acre. He named his farm "Tonawanda" after nearby Niagara Falls. In 1802, he donated more land to form what is now Town of Tonawanda. By 1830, there were over 200 residents in Town of Tonawanda. During the American Revolution, local militias helped support America's cause by fighting against British forces. In 1777, Captain John Mohawk organized a group of men called the "Tonawandans" to fight against British troops at Fort George under cover of night. Over time, this militia became known as "The Legion." During World War II (1941-1945), Tonawanda played an important role as a munitions production center due to its location on Canisteo Lake adjacent to military sites such as airfields and gunpowder plants. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or moved away because of competition from other areas in Upstate New York state; however, some businesses continued until around 1990s when they either closed or changed their name to something else entirely
