The first army gift in Tonawanda was given to the town on December 12, 1836 by Colonel Nathan H. Chapman of the New York State Militia. The Tonawanda Regiment was an infantry regiment of the New York Army National Guard. It was activated on October 16, 1917 and initially served in World War I as a part of the 33rd Infantry Division. The regiment disbanded on September 17, 1919.
Tonawanda (population: 20,000) is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. It is the home of The Tonawanda Iron and Steel Works which was founded in 1824. The company produces steel products including iron and mildsteel. The city's other businesses include a leather goods store and a grocery store. The town was named for the Genesee River which flows through it. The first settler in what is now Tonawanda was David Wilkinson in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the river. Other early settlers were John Westfall, Amos Fenton, Nicholas Gibbs and Cornelius Tucker. In 1827, Wilkinson sold his land to William Halsey who began to build a mill on the riverbank. By 1830, Halsey had acquired additional land and renamed his mill "The Tonawanda Iron & Steel Works". In 1847, he merged with another steel works located in Buffalo Grove to form what would become International Harvester Company Incorporated (IHC). IHC remains one of New York's most important companies today with headquarters located in Rochester, New York. IHC has produced many famous items including tractor trailers, agricultural equipment and appliances as well as guitars and cars. In 1912-13 when war fever gripped America there was much discussion about sending arms to Russia but no decisions were made until after President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany on April 12th 1914 On September 16th 1915 American forces invaded Serbia from the north under General Dwight D Eisenhower as part of World War I The following day Serbian Prime Minister Milan Stojadinovic surrendered at Kumanovo after months of resistance by his countrymen On October 5th 1916 American forces entered Constantinople without fighting into Ottoman Empire More than 100 years later Turkey joins NATO on May 24th 2002

Tonawanda is a village located in the town of Tonawanda, New York, United States. The population was 2,701 at the 2010 census. It is part of Niagara Falls Township. In 1814, when Erie Canal was completed and opened to traffic, traders and farmers from Buffalo and other towns along its route moved toTonawanda to trade with Native Americans and purchase goods. The first settler in Tonawanda was Isaac Morse who arrived in 1798. He built a small cabin near the present day intersection of Main Street and State Street. Morse's son-in-law Nicholas Herreshoff helped him build his cabin which still stands today on land that he donated to the town in 1825. In 1827, Captain John Stevens founded the Village of Tonawanda on lands awarded by President James Kapp as part of the Treaty between the United States and Great Britain following the Battle of Lake George. The village rapidly grew into a thriving community with over 50 residents. By 1830, there were two stores, three churches (the first being a log building erected by Obadiah Sheehan), four shops, two arsenals/ammunition stores and twenty acres (10 hectares) of land reserved for farming purposes. During this time period, during which many Native American leaders such as Chief Joseph fought against white settlers across New York state., Tonawanda boasted some of America’s most accomplished primitives including Chiefs John Graves Simcoe (born 1768), Sachem David Winthrop (1790 –1847)and Moses Potter (1797 – 1865). In 1832 Additional Townsite Land grants were made available unto villages located within five miles or more of any city or fortieth degree parallel thereof so long as they exhibited good behavior towards their respective municipalities but no alcohol or tobacco sales were allowed within their limits without prior permission from their respective authorities In 1835*, after years of petitioning by local citizens* Town officials decided that it would be best for everyone if they consolidated into one village under one governance model* With this new decision came an increase in commerce with merchants from Buffalo taking advantage of available roadsides crossings over Mohawk River leading directly into Niagara Falls
Tonawanda was one of the original towns in what is now Niagara County, New York. It was first settled by the Haudenosaunee, a Native American people, in the 17th century. The town was part of the larger Albany colony during the early days of New York State. In 1814, it entered into a treaty with Albany that gave it independence from that state. Tonawanda remained an independent community until its incorporation as a village in 1925.
