In 1941, the NYNG was formed as a result of the merger of two militias: the Buffalo Soldier Battalion and the Niagara Falls Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in World War I and II before being disbanded in 1948. The present-day NYNG is made up of three brigades: 1st Brigade, 2nd Brigade, and 3rd Brigade. Each brigade consists of three regiments (1st battalion, 2nd battalion, 3rd battalion). Each regiment is divided into several companies. The brigade also has an attached artillery unit (the 8th Battalion 9th Regiment Artillery) that provides fire support to other units within the brigade or state army. There have been deployments throughout Tonawanda's history; however, this particular deployment is likely the most recent one in town since it began in 2009. Tonawanda is a city in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 14,471 at the 2010 census. Tonawanda is the tenth most populous city in New York State and the thirteenth most populous city in Erie County. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tonawanda" is an Iroquois word meaning "place of good fishing." In 1784, British fur trader and explorer James Watt discovered what would become Tonawanda Lake while exploring the area for a route to Canada. In 1814 this became known as Niagara Falls after General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed Fort Niagara on its way to invade Canada. This event made Tonawanda an important center for trade withonthe Great Lakes region and helped spur development in the surrounding communities. In 1825, United States citizens John George Chapman and Isaac McCoy developed a small town around their farmstead called Harmony which later became Tonawanda. When Harmony was incorporated as a village in 1840 it had a population of just under 100 people; by 1860 it hadgrownto over 4,000 residents from just 350 when it first formed. One reason for this growth was that Harmony contained one of the first water systems in upstate New York – installed by Englishman George Stephenson – which enabled farmers to irrigate their crops more effectively than earlier methods. The town also boasted one of the first public schools in upstate New York and numerous businesses including groceries, clothiers, inns and hotels until they were replaced by brick-and-mortar stores during World War II when gasoline prices soared across America. During much of its history Tonewanda has been politically divided between two dominant factions: those who identify with Syracuse or Buffalo as their hometowns (the so-called "Syracuse contingent"), and those who hail from nearby Tonawanda (the "tonewandans"). Despite this political divide, Tonewandi has always been home to many talented individuals both within its own community and outside it; many famous people have come from here such as author William Saroyan, musician Yo-Yo Ma, singer/songwriter Joe Bonamassa and actor/director Woody Allen

The first Europeans to visit what is now Tonawanda were French traders who returned in 1624 and 1627. In 1664, tensions between England and France led to a war which ended with France's withdrawal from North America. English settlers began arriving in 1714 and by 1728 had founded a settlement on the south side of Canada River near present-day Watkins Glen, New York. That year, they became known as the "Township of Tonawanda". In 1753, during King George II's War, British General James Wolfe captured Fort Niagara on July 14th while besieging Toronto; this event transformed Ontario into an American state and made Tonawanda part of that new nation. In 1802, when Ohio became a U.S. state, Tonawanda became one of its first townships; it remained so until 1954 when it merged with Middletown Township to form Middletown-Tonawanda Township government area
In the early 1800s, the area around Tonawanda was a part of what is now Erie County, Pennsylvania. The first permanent settler in this area was John Swenzer, who arrived in 1795. There were also several transient settlers during this time. The first post office in Tonawanda was established in 1801, and it operated for about fifteen years. In 1819, the town became a part of Buffalo Township. In 1825, Buffalo Township split into two parts: Tonawanda Township and Niagara Falls Township. Tonawanda Township continued to exist until it was disbanded in 1869. In 1865, the Erie Canal was completed and helped spur economic growth in the area aroundTonawanda. This included an increase in trade with New York City as well as other states across the canal system. The population ofTonawanda increased rapidly during this time and by 1870 it had reached approximately 1,500 residents. This growth could be partially attributed to advances made by railroads which began service to this region starting in1865- these railways allowed goods to be transported quickly and easily from larger cities such as Buffalo and Pittsburgh to smaller towns like Tonawanda
