The United States Air Force has a rich history that dates back to World War I. The first American military air force was formed in 1917 when the United States sent its first squadron of Boeing biplanes to war in Europe. In 1924, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created as part of the United States government's attempt to gain an early lead in space exploration. The USAF was one of America's premier aerial services during the Cold War, providing support for both NATO and the Soviet Union. Today, the USAF is responsible for over half a million personnel worldwide and operates more than 200 aircraft types. One of USAF's most famous nicknames is "The Flying Fortress." These Boeing B-29 Superfortresses were designed with great speed, endurance, and firepower in mind. They could fly at high altitudes for long periods of time and were later used in various campaigns such as Vietnam and Desert Storm. It is also worth noting that since 1945, there have been no fatal accidents involving USAAF airmen conducting combat operations outside of Alaska or Hawaii. Aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin has been a major donor to the USAF through their Air Forces Foundation program since 1958. Today, the USAF's Air Forces Foundation remains one of its most important sources of support for military operations worldwide. They provide more than $460 million in grants annually to help wounded service members and their families), many of which are given in partnership with other branches of government such as the Department of Defense (DoD).
In 1968, the USAF introduced the A-10 Warthog aircraft. With its high speed and weapon systems, the A-10 was a popular choice for air defense. In 1997, the USAF began to retired the A-10s and replaced them with the F-22 Raptor aircraft. The F-22 is a highly advanced fighter that can fly at high speeds and do well in dogfights.
Tonawanda was founded in 1784 by the Mohawk nation under the leadership of Cornish Chief John Graves. The town grew rapidly after it was designated a post office in 1814, and by 1830 it had a population of 2,500. In 1847, Tonawanda became part of the new United States when New York state was organized. By 1850, the town had reached its peak with a population of 10,000. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Tonawanda's economy declined as crops were lost to warring states. After the war, Tonawanda experienced another decline until it regained some prominence as an agricultural center in the early 21st century. Today, Tonawanda is home to around 7,000 people and is considered one of the most economically vibrant communities in upstate New York.residential development has increased dramatically since 2000; in that year alone there were over 50 projects completed in and around tonawandana including retail stores such as Walmart and KFC; mixed-use developments such as The Grove at Walton Valley which includes an arena and multiple businesses; public works projects such as a new water main system and upgrading of local roads; and agricultural facilities such as an ethanol plant. The community is also home to two schools: Black Rock Technical High School (Rochester) on Main Street near where Tonawanda began developing into what is now known as DowntownTonawanda Comprehensive School (on Elmira Road) offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade along with continuing education opportunities for teachers statewide who are certified by NYSEDA
In 1825, the Tonawanda people were forcibly removed from their land in upstate New York by the United States government. They had been living there for centuries and were not consulted about the decision to remove them. The Tonawanda people are descendants of the Lenape people who lived in present-day Pennsylvania and Ontario before being removed to what is now Upstate New York in 1784.
