Tarrytown, New York is a small town in upstate New York that has been around since the late 1700s. The name comes from the Indian word "tarry" which means to make a stand or encampment. The first European settlers in Tarrytown were Dutch and they named their town after the river of the same name. In 1814, Tarrytown was chosen as the capital of what was then known as Gananda County because it was considered the most important port on Long Island. The city was founded by Nicholas Van Buren, one of President James K. Polk's cabinet members and he wanted to create an eastern stronghold against American forces attacking Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The city grew rapidly and by 1830 there were 1,500 residents living in downtown Tarrytown. By 1840, Tarrytown had reached 5,000 residents and it became an independent republic under General John Pemberton during America's fight for independence from Great Britain. After independence was achieved, Tarrytown transitioned into a municipality with a Mayor-Council system and it continued to grow until 1890 when it lost its status as an independent republic and became part of New York City.During World War II, much of what is now downtown Tarrytown was used as fighter training fields for Defense Air Force Base Niagara Falls which opened in 1945. Today much of this area is occupied by State University at Buffalo where undergraduate students study arts & sciences while graduate students study business & law.. In 1957, Tary Town voted to become an incorporated village which allowed for more social services such as libraries, parks & recreation etc..The population growth slowed down significantly starting in the early 1990s due to several factors including increasing poverty rates among inner city families and competition from surrounding suburbs that began popping up beginning inthe mid-1980s..In 2001 Census data showed that only 9% of residents lived within 2 miles of US military installations (of which 4% were Army barracks) while 88% lived within 5 miles ..Today many people who call TaryTown home commute long distances to jobs outside the community or live elsewhere on Long Island while still spending some time at home..TaryTown successfully lobbied unsuccessfully for statehood in 1912 but failed again in 1916 ..Today many people feel like they are two villages separated by a large open field
Tarrytown is a small town in western New York, United States. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Tarrytown were their Iroquois and Mohawk ancestors who roamed the area for centuries before settling here around 1724. The first white settlers arrived in 1755 when Colonel George Washington and his troops passed through this region on their way to fight with France during the Seven Years' War. The first post office was established in 1767, and it changed its name to Tarrytown in 1807 after Major General Israel Putnam's victory over Native American forces at Ticonderoga Creek near present-day Tarrytown. In 1825, John Fenton opened a ferry service from Buffalo to Niagara Falls called Fenton's Ferry Landing which became one of the busiest crossings on the Niagara River until it was destroyed by flooding in 1886. In 1827, purchasing land adjoining what is now State Street (later Fifth Avenue), Andrew Jackson founded Jackson College (now Allegany University) here as an agricultural school teaching young men how to farm and raise livestock. In 1839, he appointed Isaac Asimov as its first professor of mathematics and physics after Asimov's thesis on light waves won him an award from King George III at Windsor Castle. Asimov remains one of America's most famousessors today and has also served as president of both Allegany University and Cornell University (where he created Ithaca College). In 1865-1866, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Governor Nathanial Greene built Fort Tioga here to control Indian activity adjacent to Buffalo Neck Road/State Street where many soldiers had encampment while awaiting orders back home. After failing spectacularly to stop any Indian raids or maintaing law & order within his own borders; Greene ordered his military commanders westward expansion into new territory including this small town known then only as "Tiny Tioga". This resulted in some interesting naming choices by future mayors such as Moses sonnets "Queen City" for Buffalo Neck Road/state street followed by Syracuse NY becoming "King City" due east along state street from fort Tioga across disputed territory acquired via war - all still going strong today! A number of businesses started up downtown soon after: hotel Empire State Building; grocery store Jobson Bros.; lumberyard Wm Henshaw & Sons; hardware store Guglielmo Brothers; restaurant Crocker's BBQ & Grill; bar Harry’s Barbecue & Grill among others soon replaced traditional stores with larger businesses catering specifically to tourists coming downriver for ice skating or just having a good time! Today there are several dozen souvenir shops lining Main Street selling everything imaginable related to history like postcards, buttons, mugs etc., making it perhaps one of the most popular tourist destinations that New York City has to offer!
