In 1714, George Washington and his army invaded and conquered what is now Ontario County from the French. After this victory over France, General James Wolfe divided Canada into two parts: One part went to Sir John Johnson (now Toronto), while the other part went to George Washington’s brother-in-law Colonel Edward Braddock (now Westminster). In 1803, Peter Kable founded what are today's villages of Auburn and Batavia on Cayuga Lake because he found that land east of those villages was too waterlogged for farming purposes. He called these new townships "Kabletown", since he had acquired them from Andrew Jackson's estate following his victory over Native Americans at Horseshoe Bend a year earlier. Onondaga Creek serpentine ridge became a major transportation corridor when it led down from near Syracuse to points beyond on both sides of Cayuga Lake; goods being transported by Indians and Spanish colonists were unloaded at either end of this artery for shipment downriver to Kingston or Buffalo or farther still to Albany or Montreal via Quebec City and Ottawa River vessels passing through Onondaga Falls before reaching Niagara Falls just north of where modern SUFFIELD takes place today along with all its associated infrastructure – businesses mentioned above including lumberyardsJasper & Company mills which manufactured plank shoes prior spilling logs below falls during winter months)
