The Syracuse National Guard was established on November 16, 1892. The guard has a rich history that dates back to when the city of Syracuse had its own police force and needed an organization to deal with the influx of immigrants. On October 25, 1907, Mayor James Duffy requested the New York State Legislature create a national guard unit in Syracuse as part of the state's response to World War I. The legislation was passed and the town of Onondaga became the first municipality in New York State to form a national guard unit. On December 10, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson announced that all military forces in America would be transformed into one large army under his direction. This created an opportunity for local units such as the Syracuse National Guard to become part of this new force. On January 1st 1917, Governor Charles Evans Hughes activated the militia and placed it under control of Army General John J Pershing. By May 1917 there were over 3,000 members active in the national guard throughout America. In 1918-191920 two major conflicts took place within American society: World War I and World War II. As a result, many members of the national guard served during these years without being called up for duty; however they continued to serve through other organizations such asthe National Guard Reserve or by calling themselves “ mercenaries” while still on active duty with their original unit or brigade (i.e., “Army Air Corps Guardsmen”). In 1942-1945 more than 6000 guardsmen served in Europe as part of Operation Neptune's Spear; however most returned home before hostilities ended on September 2nd 1945 due to war illness or injury (e also see footnote 5). This paper will not discuss individual soldiers from this time period but will focus instead on how various communities across New York State responded to calls for service during World War I and WWII. It is important to note that many men from these wars did not eventually return home but rather formed various reserve components which continue serving today including post-9/11 military personnel

Syracuse, New York is a city situated in Central New York on the US state of Syracuse. The population was estimated to be over 350,000 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most populous cities in the state. Syracuse is also home to two universities- Syracuse University and the State University of New York at Buffalo- as well as several hospitals and other businesses. The earliest settlers in what is now Syracuse were Native Americans who roamed the area before arriving in approximately 1624. The first European to arrive was Giovanni Battista Carafa, an Italian explorer and trader who landed on Long Island Sound and explored present-day Onondaga County. He named the area Acqua Nova (New Water). On October 14, 1628, following his arrival, Carafa donated land for a church and school in what is now downtown Syracuse. In 1714, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Store on west Main Street which became one of the largest mercantile enterprises in upstate New York. In 1717–18 George Washington visited Canandaigua during his military campaigns against Great Britain; he observed that "the town [could] not have been more flourishing". In 1768–69 Samuel Johnson visited Auburn Hills (now part of Rochester) while writing A Rasalgette Carol and noted that "the rich Harpy's nest" had been destroyed by fire some time prior thereto but that "every thing appeared quite new". The United States National Guard is one of the most important organizations in the country. It is made up of reservists who are called to serve their nation on a voluntary basis. The Guard has been around since 1790, and it was authorized as an independent military force by the Second Continental Congress. Since then, it has undergone many changes, including becoming a federally funded entity in 1941. Today, the National Guard provides essential services to both the military and law enforcement agencies across the United States. In addition, it engages in activities such as providing security for public events and guarding critical infrastructure. One of the primary functions of the National Guard is to provide service when Required By Law (RLC). This means that they are not free to engage in any other activities outside of their assigned mission statement without prior approval from Congress. This rule was put into place during World War II in order to ensure that our soldiers were not diverted from their combat roles and would instead be focused on defending our citizens at home. As time passed and more - primarily male - members were drafted into the armed forces, RLC became less common. However, when needed again, there have always been men willing and able to enlist in The Guard thanks to its participatory culture and cadre of volunteers milling about everywhere you look these days! Syracuse, New York is a historic town in central New York on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The population was 31,851 at the 2010 census. Syracuse has been the capital of New York since 1785 and is now home to the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1814, it became part of the new state of Erie following its merger with Upper Canada. The first European settlers in what is now Syracuse were French Canadians who arrived in 1624 and soon founded a fur trade post called La Ville-de-Foucault on the east bank of Mohawk River. The areaaround present-day Syracuse was part of Iroquois territory until 1700 when they ceded it to Great Britain. A German family named Schell settled near what is now Auburn Avenue in 1772 and began a fur trading operation there as well. The first permanent settler in present-day Syracuse was Philip Schuyler, an immigrant from Holland who landed at Canandaigua on July 8, 1779. He erected a log cabin known as Whitehall on Tryon Street for his wife and three children before moving away about two weeks later to start his own business interests further down Tryon Street. In 1785, George Washington appointed John Player Deputy Surveyor General for Western Pennsylvania and Northern Ohio under Mount Vernon’s command during his residency at Valley Forge National Historical Park (now Patriot Hill). On March 2 that year, Player purchased 375 acres (190 ha) around present-day downtown Syracuse from Nicholas Eastman for £110 sterling plus 10% interest payable annually over five years or $27 per acre ($0.9/ha). In early 1800s several mills developed along Clear Creek which served as transportation arteries linking up northwestern Pennsylvania with eastern Ontario via Buffalo and Rochester; these included one built by Andrew Winthrop (1763–1836) just below First Niagara Bridge across then Village Brook Gorge between Orangeburg Road and Rensselaer Boulevard.). Erie Canal company president Samuel Morse came into possession of land southwest corner Northumberland Avenue northeast corner Clinton Avenue where Central Ave meets Seneca Drive after its purchase from Nicholas Eastman during construction phase starting December 3rd 1825; Morse renamed this tract "Canandaigua." Erie Canal company head Isaac Niles bought 400 acres adjoining Canandaigua tract from Samuel Morse late summer 1830; Niles renamed this tract "Westmoreland". Today Northwest corner Seneca Dr & Northeast corner Clinton Ave are still marked by these original purchases although their boundaries have changed slightly due primarily to development within neighborhoods surrounding Central Ave.: northwest corner Seneca Dr., northeast Corner Clinton Ave., can be found landmarks such as Stroudsburg Civic Center & Parma Museum while southeast Corner Seneca Dr NW marks site where former US Post Office used to stand before it was relocated inside Stroudsburg Municipal Building & currently occupied by Parma Cafe
