In the early 1800s, Syracuse was a thriving agricultural center. The city's first military deployment occurred in 1802 when the American Revolution began. Colonel George Washington ordered the mobilization of local militia to help suppress British forces. The regiment served throughout the war, including engagements at Saratoga and Yorktown. After the war ended, many members of the regiment returned home, but a few decide to continue their service in wartime as volunteers in the New York Militia. In 1824, Captain Elijah Purdy organized a company of militia from native troops living in Syracuse to fight against Native Americans during Buffalo Bills Invasion. This event is known as "Syracuse's War." From 1825-1827, Captain Purdy led a unit of volunteer militiamen called "The Black Watch" against Indians on Long Island Sound. He also led units into battle at Niagara Heights and Battle Of White Plains Creek. After Captain Purdy's death in 1830, his unit was merged with another group to form "The Brave Fencibles." This unit served until 1861 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts by President Abraham Lincoln. In 1863, Syracuse became embroiled in the American Civil War when Confederate troops invaded our town looking for supplies and munitions that they could use against Union forces stationed nearby on Manhattan island. A small detachment of cavalry under General James Higginson were able to successfully repel this attack and return home safely without losses or damage however this victory created an opportunity for Confederate forces to move closer to Syracuse and potentially destroy it if they had gained entry into town undetected. As a result of this attack, General Sherman ordered all Union soldiers south of Buffalo Bayou towards Chattanooga where they would be interned rather than fighting on Manhattan Island which would have allowed Confederate forces access into our city unopposed.} Aftermath: even thoughNYC couldn't be destroyed like Atlanta did (due to lack of resources) & 400k people still lived there (& 300k Yankees resided there), city got pretty looted over time

In 1850, Syracuse became part of newly formed Buffalo County when Buffalo City separate from Erie County. The industrial revolution led to massive growth in Syracuse through hiring out labor for factories throughout upstate New York and into Canada across Lake Ontario. As manufacturing jobs declined throughout the 20th century,snythe began declining with them too which eventually led to low economic development overall until recently due largely to lack of investment by both local businesses and tax dollars diverted away from other priorities
