The Syracuse Air National Guard's 111th Airlift Wing is responsible for the deployment of over 30,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to support the local military and government in Upstate New York. This year, their gift history will be commemorated with a special air show in honor of Colonel Michael P. O'Neill, former Commander-in-Chief and first Marine officer to lead the United States Air Force when it was created as a service branch in 1947. The event will features flyovers by USAF jets from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; and Kingsville Army Air Field, Texas. Since its inception as an independent military wing on November 12th 1946, the 111th Airlift Wing has made countless deliveries to local governments throughout Upstate New York. In addition to providing essential support for our Armed Forces members and civilians who rely on our airspace, the wing has also been instrumental in helping make Syracuse one of the most popular tourist destinations in upstate New York. In recent years we have seen an increase in interest from visitors from all around the nation as they come learn more about our history and culture associated with the 121st Fighter Wing stationed here at Elmendorf-Richardson AFB. This year marks not only an important anniversary for us as a unit but also celebrates another milestone for our community as well: our new headquarters building opened its doors on October 26th! We are excited about this new era which is sure to continue making Syracuse home to both fierce warriors and tourists who appreciate what we do for them!

The Syracuse Air National Guard's Deployed Gift History began in 1951 with the gift of a Lockheed L-5A Sentinel to then-Lt. Col. Clifford Hathaway Jr. The mission of the AAFG was to support the United States Air Force by providing donated goods and services. In 1957, a gift from Boeing Co., was made to the AAFG when President Eisenhower presented them with an 8,000 hp P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear. That same year, a gift from Rolls-Royce Plc., was given to the AAFG in honor of Lt. Gen. Curtis LeMay and his commitment during World War II - delivering more than 5 million pounds of supplies and equipment to Allied forces in Europe. From 1967 until 1984, gifts were given monthly in memory of Majors General John Erskine (1915-1983) and Chester Wold (1924-2004). On November 1st, 1984, Major General Joseph Jumper became commandant/CEO of the AAFG effective November 1st and continued that role until his death on September 26th, 2006.
Syracuse, New York is a city in central New York State. The population was 792,835 as of the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in the state and the fifth-most populous city on the East Coast of the United States. Syracuse is home to Ohana HealthCare System and Tompkins Cortland Community College. Syracuse also has two airports: One serving Ithaca and one serving Buffalo. Syracuse was first settled by Native Americans in what is now central New York City from at least 1614 until 1764. In 1764, colonists founded Syracuse after Purchase of Manhattan by George Washington. By 1800, Syracuse had become an important commercial center due to its location on Lake Ontario and its river trade with other northern settlements such as Albany and Utica. The Erie Canal was completed through Syracuse in 1825 and led to growth in commerce and industry along with rapid population growth which Brian J Fenton called "the great internal migration" that created "one of America's most rapidly growing cities." At its peak during the 19th century, Syracuse boasted over 200 fine hotels; 30 factory plants; 100 news organizations; 10 symphony orchestras; 300 banks; 5 million dollars worth of real estate holdings; 350 college students In 1874–75, local businessmen organized a pauper's relief campaign which raised $1 million for various local charities including charity schools for girls and mental hospitals The Great Depression led to economic decline beginning in 1933 which contributed to social unrest culminating with riots on November 15th when police used tear gas against unarmed protesters demonstrating against economic conditions caused by lack of government investment In 1965–1966 Mayor Raymond Alfano sponsored passage of a bill creating Ohana Health Care System (OHHS) that would provide health care services for uninsured residents On September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks occurred resulting in widespread destruction throughout the city including much damage to historical sites such as Castle Clinton which served as fortifications during King George III's War
The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History is a unique and cherished tradition that began in the early days of the USAF. It allows airmen and their families to express their appreciation for years of service through special gifts. The history of this gift system begins with the first deployment, in 1947, of the A-10 Warthog aircraft as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear. This historic event was a means by which General Dwight D. Eisenhower expressed his admiration for America’s flying ability and offered support for Allied campaigns in Europe. The A-10 Warthog continued to be used throughout the Cold War, being deployed in many operations such as Desert Storm, Kosovo and Iraq. Today, the A-10 Warthog remains an important asset of the USAF fleet and its deployments continue around the world. The deployable gift history has been adopted by other branches of our military including Army, Marines, National Guard and Reserve forces across country. These gestures of appreciation are some measure of acknowledgement for our servicemen and women who have fought and died in defense of freedom around the world. The USAF deployed gift history in 1954. The first gift history was organized by Lt. Col. Edwin A. "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., who served as the Deputy Director of Program Management for the USAF Weapons Systems Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. From then on, gifts were sent to various units and installations around the world as part of various gifts program events.
Syracuse, New York is a city in central New York on the Mohawk River. The population was 123,853 at the 2010 census. In 1814, its first permanent settler were French Huguenots who arrived from Canada and founded the village of Clinton on the river's east bank. By 1825, Syracuse had become an important transportation hub for goods coming down the Mohawk Valley and into Central New York. In 1827, Syracuse became an incorporated town and was renamed after Alexander Hamilton because he had played an important role in developing it as a commercial center. In 1785, Revolutionary war veteran John Butler established a small farm at what is now downtown Syracuse to serve as a garrison for his regiment during the American Revolution. The site of Butler's farm remains today part of downtown Syracuse known as Battery Park City. On November 14th of that year, George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States at Lafayette Hall in what is now Union Square in Syracuse. From this location, he could see all points north and south along Lake Ontario while engaged in battle with British troops under General Cornwallis near Saratoga Springs across the lake from Albany. After independence was secured in 1783, business grew rapidly here thanks to new transportation routes developed by entrepreneur Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1748-1819) includingcanals linking up with lakes Erie and Ontario; this permitted commerce between Great Lakes ports and eastern markets outside of Boston through canals such as these which linked Albany then Buffalo
In 1785, the French and their Indian allies attacked and destroyed an American fort at West Point on Long Island. The attack was a humiliation for France and it led to a military buildup in America by Great Britain. The British began building Fort Niagara on the Canadian side of the border as part of their preparations for war with France. The Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War and brought peace to America. But because of continued French activity along the New York-Canada border, this period also saw growth in smuggling activities between Canada and America. This trade reached its peak in 1814 when more than 2 million sacks of goods were smuggled into North America through Quebec City alone.

This first evidence was taken onboard USS George Washington where Flight Sergeant James Wickersham took off from Philadelphia Municipal Airport on December 12th 1918 led by Captain Halsey Gaffney aboard USS Mare Island Naval Shipyard PBY Catalina flying Anschutz C-4 type machine guns Lowe Field Code No: 4992/A2G1 piloted by First Lieutenant Albin Fessenden assigned 448 Squadron RAF at High Wycombe about 15 miles NW OfAME - high altitude photo bombing operation using Sopwith Camel aircraft during WWI being carried out jointly between Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – then called Dominion Intelligence Bureau operating out of Ottawa Ontario Canada -and USAAF at Maxwell Field Alabama USA On November 10th 1918 American aviator Major Eugene Ely flying a Curtiss YF-16C Helldiver shot down 1st Lt Fritz Müller von Lossow Germany's DH9 dive bomber Scourge making him only the second German flyer killed during WWI - followed quickly 3 days later when American Major Jesse Barnes lost his life when his Curtiss P-36 Mustang crashed into Swiss Alps near Thurnwalden Switzerland while attempting to provide cover for Allied forces assaulting Zugsur Valley Switzerland duringWWI.- This event marked also first time such sortof aviation activity occurred anywhere in world outside North America .
