The town prospered as a port and trading post until the end of World War II, when aviation made it an important center for military air traffic. Suffern is a town in the Town of Suffern, New York, United States. The population was 2,462 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hudson Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Suffern were Dutch traders in 1624 and their carpenter-builder friend Hendrick Van Schaick. On May 5, 1626, they founded a trading post on an unnamed creek near modern day Amherst village. In 1627, Captain John Smith of England visited this post and named it "Newburgh". In 1714, when the Province of New York was divided into two parts between Great Britain and France as part of the Treaty of Utrecht, Suffern came under British control. It remained so until 1763 when it became part of the newly formed Province of Westchester which merged with New York in 1796. The first settler in what is now Suffern was Nathaniel Greene who arrived from Rhode Island in 1725. He platted what is now called Green's Village on semantics land fronting Route 9 south from his home at present day Main Street (now NY 8472) and built a log cabin on top of an old sawmill he had purchased some years earlier from Nicholas Biddle for $100 (that would be about $4,000 today). Greene also erected a small gristmill on that site which still stands today (). His descendants continued to live there until 1817 when they sold their holdings to Nicholas Aiello who made them into a large milling business with more than 60 employees (). Aiello's son-in-law Joseph Lackawanna bought out Aiello's interest and continued operating the mill until its closure in 1924 after which it reverted back to Lackawanna heirs () before becoming derelict again over time (). Howeverometime during this time period evidence suggests that one or more mills operated near present day US Route 9W known as "Lackawanna Road" (). So sometime around 1950 or 1960 someone decided to resurface "Lackawanna Road" () and began trafficizing it which has resulted in several structures being destroyed along with most or all traces of original infrastructure including an early water tower still standing today (). Anyway those days are long gone folks !!! So much for history lesson…..

Suffern, New York is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement began as a small cluster of log cabins on a tract of land grant to Jacob Van Valkenburgh by his wife's father in 1785. By 1802, the village had emerged as an agricultural community with six stores and twenty-three families. In 1815, Suffern became the first town in Rensselaer County when it was organized from parts of four other towns: Spring Valley (now West Hempstead), Kingsville (now Saratoga Springs), Easton and North Aurora. In 1830, Suffern became one of two towns in Rensselaer County to be incorporated as villages; the others were Auburn and Clinton. Suffern's incorporation set off a series of growth and development milestones for its residents including sawmills, churches and schools; until 1895 when suffrage rights were granted to women voters through the initiative process. As late as 1892 there were only 130 residents living in what is now Suffern proper; however by 1925 there had risen to 1,200 people within its limits alone due largely to waves of migration from rural areas across New York State during that decade of industrialization brought about byFactory farming methods which had arrived in America via England around 1800.. During World War II while most local manufacturing went into suspendence due to wartime shortages gasoline was rationed so many homes still used wood burning stoves even though those days are long gone! Some citizens did manage to get some new technology like air conditioning which helps fuel their memories today! Suffern's history goes back to the 17th century when it was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The first settler in Suffern was Nicholas Van Cortlandt and his family who arrived in 1664. Today's town was formed from parts of two other towns: North Pomona and South Pomona. The name "Suffern" comes from Englishman John Suffield who settled here in 1690. He named the place after himself and his kinsman Sir Williamsuffield who had also been born in England but had immigrated to America about 1670. The suffix "-en" originated with Samuel Seward (1720-1792) an American merchant who bought land here from the Indians in 1768-69 and built a mill onthe river where Suffern now stands. In 1814, General Nathaniel Greene fought at Saratoga as part of Ulysses S Grant's Army and later became President James K. Polk's Secretary of War; he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery thereabouts.. From 1814 until 1860, suffern lay within the boundaries of Albany County; since then it has been located within Orange County According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of 2010, there were 12,567 people living in Suffern Township including 474 households out of which 38% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42% were non-families. 31% of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2+2 kids while the average family size was 3+. A total number 1123 businesses operated inside town limits according to 2008 Census figures (down from 1130 Businesses 2010).
