The National Guard in Spring Valley, New York has been a part of the community since 1792. The first troops were called to help with the American Revolution. Today, the National Guard is an important part of municipal and state life in Spring Valley. The Guard has been involved in many local and national events over the years, most notably during World War II when it played a major role in providing manpower and resources for the war effort. The Guard was organized on April 25, 1792 into three companies under Captain John Armstrong. On November 1, 1792, First Regiment was disbanded because its members had not ratified the United States Constitution. Second Regiment was organized on December 12th and changed their name to Third Regiment on January 1st, 1793 due to confusion caused by other units which had also been activated that month. In 1802 Third Regiment was redesignated Fourth Regiment and again changed their name to Seventh Regiment on February 9th because President James Ketchum decided that all militia Units must have unique names according to their location (New York). On October 14th 1802 Fourth regiment relieved Second regiment at Niagara Falls after an attack by Native Americans resulted in five killed and twenty-six wounded. On October 5th 1800 Sixth regiment arrived from Canada with stores for Fort George Clinton which became known as "the Fortress." Fifth regiment arrived from New York City on July 26th 1800 as skirmishers only to be disbanded soon afterwards due to lack of volunteers for duty in America's Revolutionary War against Great Britain In 1801 Lieutenant Colonel Tryon formed a battalion of riflemen out of disbanded Sixth regiment who served until they were mustered out on September 30th 1805 . Lieutenant Colonel Tryon's Battalion reorganized as Seventh regiment February 9teenth 1802 and served through the Mexican War until they were mustered out August 15th 1850 . Spring Valley is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Syracuse. The town of Spring Valley was located in western New York, on the north side of the valley between Niagara and Lake Ontario. It had a population of about 3,000 people in 1812. The first settler in Spring Valley was Nicholas Lowrey, who came overland from Canada in 1810. He built a log cabin on the east side of the valley near what is now downtown Spring Valley. In 1813, Lowrey's son John built a larger cabin on the west side of the valley. The first post office was established in Spring Valley in 1815. In 1828, Nicholas Lowrey's grandson Jonathan Lowrey moved his family toSpringdale, Pennsylvania (now Pittsburgh). His grandson John continued to farm and ranch around Spring Valley until he died young in 1888. After John's death, his widow Sarah took over management ofthe farm and mill at Springdale and ran it until her death in 1916. In 1922, she bequeathed her farmstead and mill buildings to the Town of SpringValley for use as a municipally owned cultural center. The town lost its commercial viability when World War II began; however, it regained some popularity due to its rich springs which were used by locals for water filtration and other purposes during that time period
