Spring Valley, New York is one of the most significant coffee-growing areas in America. The town was founded in 1848 by farmers who grew coffee on their land near the present-day village of Spring Valley. In 1915, the first Starbucks coffee shop opened in Spring Valley and continued to operate until 1995. Today, there are over a dozen cafes located throughout Spring Valley that sell artisanal coffee products. One of the earliest examples of artisanal coffee production occurs in Monte Cristo County, California. There, growers used small batch techniques to produce high quality beans for local customers. Over time, larger plantations began to grow Coffee here and others across the United States because of its unique environmental conditions and potential for producing extremely rich flavor profiles. Today’s artisanal coffees come from many different parts of the world and reflect a variety of styles and origins. Some favorites include Guatemalan cherrybomb roast, Ethiopian bodega Blend, Colombian rainforest blend (a blend made up mostly of fruit) and Kenyan Kuruma Koffee (a type of black cedar roasted with processed sugar). The first coffee shop in Spring Valley was opened in 1907 by a group of Dutch immigrants. The shop was known as the Dutch Coffee House and served coffee, tea, and pastries. In 1916, the business changed hands and became The Dutch Cafe. In 1922, the cafe moved to its current location on Main Street and began serving breakfast and lunch. Over the years, the cafe has been run by many different families who have had a hand in its continued success. Today, The Dutch Cafe is open for business every day from 7am to 5pm.
