The Air Force has always been a large part of the community in Spring Valley, New York. The institution was founded in 1947 and has played an important role in the area ever since. In 1951, the Air Force offered a gift to Spring Valley residents which is still remembered today. The gift was a plane named after Colonel George Custer, who fought in World War I. This donation helped to support local businesses and help make Spring Valley an attractive place to live. In 1961, another large donation was made to the town by the Air Force. This donation was a new bomber named after General Curtis LeMay. This airplane helped to improve air traffic in Spring Valley and also supported local initiatives such as education and health care programs. The Spring Valley Air Force Station was the installation for the New York Air National Guard's (NYANG) 147th Fighter Wing. The wing was activated on 1 October 1948 and absorbed the 168th Fighter Wing, which had been activated on 15 August 1947. The 147th Fighter Wing flew Lockheed P-38 Lightnings from Spring Valley. On 15 July 1957, the 149th Fighter Squadron was activated at Spring Valley with Republic F-84 Thunderjets. It became a Tactical fighter squadron and operated along with other units of the New York ANG until it was inactivated on 30 September 1958 when all combat squadrons were disbanded as part of a reorganization of the air forces in response to budget cuts.

Spring Valley, New York is located in the town of Allston, on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. It straddles what was once a Native American hunting ground and has been inhabited by Europeans for more than three centuries. The first settlers arrived in 1664, when William Penn sent out a group of men to explore and trade with the local Lenape people. They were followed by other colonists in 1673, and by 1824, Spring Valley had become part of the township of Allston. The earliest buildings in Spring Valley were log cabins built by Scotch-Irish immigrants. Over time, these dwellings were replaced by larger structures made from stone and steel. The local mills became important factors in the economic development of Spring Valley during its early years; they produced goods such as flour, cheese, lumber, and potatoes. In 1916, however, World War I halted production at the mills until after the war ended. When World War II began, however, they resumed operations as well as providing employment for locals during wartime times. Today's community is located on a large parcel of land that had been used as an animal pasture before being donated to it for use as a residential community. The main shopping area is located near Highway 9 exit 4A; it includes several independent stores and restaurants as well as a few small businesses led by their owner- operators. There are also several parks within walking distance; one features a playground and park benches while another offers tennis courts and barbecue pits among other amenities.
The Spring Valley area was first settled by the Lenape Indians in 1624. The Dutch arrived in 1664 and began to farm the land. In 1764, a group of Revolutionary War veterans, including General Clinton, founded the town of Spring Valley on the east side of the Hudson River. The town grew quickly and by 1812 it had a population of 1,200. In 1814, John D'Arcy Harden bought property in Spring Valley from Gen. George Washington for $10,000. Harden built what is now known as Harden Hall on his land. In 1851, Colonel Augustus Porter purchased Harden Hall and moved his family to live there permanently. In 1923, Colonel Porter's son-in-law and daughter joined him at Harden Hall and continued to live there until their deaths in 1986 and 2002 respectively. In 1865, Drury Lane Hospital was founded in Spring Valley by Doctor Samuel Morse with help from Mr. James Buchanan Woodbury Jr., one of New York City's leading physicians at that time. The hospital was soon renamed after Abraham Lincoln when it became an important center for medical care in New York City during the American Civil War. It functioned as a military hospital during both World Wars and then transitioned into civilian use after the war ended. Today, Drury Lane Hospital is an important healthcare provider in Spring Valley with over 100 beds providing services such as maternity/paternity care; surgery; mental health services; rehabilitative medicine; pediatric care; heart disease screenings/testing; diabetes screenings/testing; cancer screenings/testing; lab work etc.. After years of growth and development throughout most of this century (including several phases of gentrification),Spring Valley has experienced its most recent waves of population decline beginning around 2000-2005 due to factors such as changes in job opportunities (the concentration within commuting distance from downtown Manhattan); crime rates (which have increased significantly since then outside of city limits); economic recession(); displacement caused by new housing developments near public transportation hubs like Grand Central Terminal.; however recent efforts by local officials to improve public access to education within walking or biking distance have started to reverse some trends
