Sleepy Hollow is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Ontario and Niagara Falls. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most populous towns in upstate New York. It is also one of the oldest cities in Upstate New York, with its first settlements dating back to 1710. The town has been home to coffee beans for over 150 years. The Sleepy Hollow Coffee Company was founded by Samuel Morse in 1824. In 1861, the company became part of National Coffee Company and continued production until 1922. Today, there are several small coffee businesses operating out of Sleepy Hollow – including Joe's Coffee House and The Owl Cafe – all offering their own unique brews and experiences. One of the biggest attractions to Sleepy Hollow is its history – from its earliest settlers to today's coffee-makers who continue to contribute to the community economy. There are many interesting anecdotes about how coffee has shaped both local culture and society hereabouts; some that we would be hard-pressed not to include here! Some notable moments include: In 1825, when Reverend Andrew Johnson preached his famous sermon "On Drunkards" from a log cabin near present-day Main Street (now called Old Mill Road), he used coffee beans as part of his sermon material . . . 465 years later! In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order authorizing use of military strength for relief purposes following an earthquake in California . . . Despite this proclamation being met with ridicule by some political rivals (eager for war!), it actually led to more than $100 million worth of goods being shipped across country via railway cargo container ! Just prior to World War II,Sleepy Hollow produced what may have been America's first commercial espresso machine – thanks again to stovetop brewing !! One can only imagine how much more amazing this technology would have become if it hadn't been lost during World War II !! Finally, we must mention our resident caffeine expert: Mr. Spock! During prohibition era Alcoholics Anonymous meetings were often held at various hotels around Sleepy Hollow due to lack thereof elsewhere !! The Arabs started brewing coffee in the 12th century AD and by the 14th century they had discovered how to roast beans properly. They started exporting coffee to Europe and Asia and soon began using different roasts for their espresso drinks. In 1847, Dutchman Diederik van den Bergh created the first espresso machine which he called the Koffiekop. By 1893, Italian Italians were brewing coffee at home using small pressurized pots that used water from a cistern on top of their house. This helped make Italy one of the world's leading coffee producers until World War II when Coffee producing countries such as Indonesia and Brazil became world leaders.
Sleepy Hollow is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York–Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by European Americans in 1776 and was named for Sleepy Hollow Lake, which lay to the east of the town. In 1814, Sleepy Hollow became a village. The name change came about because a popular story said that an Indian chief named John Slumbering had his sleep disturbed by a deer running through the woods near his home and so he called the place "Sleepy Hollow". In 1847, Sleepy Hollow became part of Westchester County when it was organized from portions of Saratoga County. As part of its development as a bedroom community for western New Yorkers after World War II, much infrastructure—including water systems and public schools—was built there during that time. In 1951, when Westchester County merged with Hunterdon County to form new statewide government under President Harry S Truman, Sleepy Hallow remained within Hunterdon County but certain platted areas in the village were annexed into neighboring municipalities such as Clifton Park and Yonkers.
Sleepy Hollow is a town in the Catskills of New York. It was first settled by Scots immigrants in the late 17th century. The original name of the town, which means "sleepy hollow" (a name derived from its location at an old swamp), was Grasmere. A group of Iroquois Indians called it Sockatoo because they thought there was a monster living in the area. In 1795, Revolutionary War General George Washington and his army camped near Sleepy Hollow during their march to Saratoga Springs. Nearby, Major John Sullivan's brigade rested before fighting at White Plains on July 9, 1795. The townspeople decided to change their name to Sleepy Hollow in honor of General Washington's visit and rename themselves after him when they got back home. The first post office opened in 1806 and became known as Clintonville after President James K. Polk moved into the community during his presidential campaign of 1884. In 1868, Averill Harriman bought land adjacent to what is now Sleepy Hollow Cemetery for a horse farm called Harriman's Hunting Grounds which he turned into one of America's leading horse racing locations later that year. In 1886, he sold most of this land to Harvard College for $1 million dollars making him one of its largest donors ever. In 1896, following Indian removal policies implemented byPresident Grover Cleveland, most of the remaining Native American population living within easy driving distance left for good as part of a larger relocation effort across America known as The Great Sioux Nation Removal Act Of 1898. The village located east-northeast ofSleepy Hollow began developing rapidly due to increasing industry along with easier access to transportation due to opening up Interstate 81 south from I-87 just east of the village limits on November 1st,1968 when portions including both villages were annexed by New York City becoming part of Park Slope neighborhood
