Scarsdale, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1824 by settlers from Ulster County and named for General John Scarsdale. It was incorporated as a village in 1868. The current name of the town comes from the site of one of its first settlements on a peninsula formed by the Beaver Creek and Mahoning Rivers. The townsite of Scarsdale was chosen by lottery on March 4, 1824 as part of a land grant to Colonel George Washington Hennepin. At that time, it consisted of only two rods square (about 0.4 miles²). The grant also included 640 acres (246 ha) on either side of Beaver Creek and 2 acres (100 m²) each along both banks of the Mahoning River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Scarsdale arrived on July 10, 1824 with his family from Ulster County and named it for General John Scarsdale who had been killed during the Battle Of Fallen Timbers in Ohio some months earlier. In 1830, Scarsdale became part of Erie County when that county was created from parts of Canandaigua and Buffalo counties. In 1825, James Fenton opened a gristmill on Beaver Creek which began production three years later; this mill remained operative until 1902 when it was replaced by an electric turbine mill built by Standard-Grain Mills Corporation which remains operational today as Niagara Falls Mills #1 outside Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada
