The name may be derived from an Ojibwe word meaning "to scratch oneself." The first local school was opened in 1892. The current middle school, Scarsdale-East Tonawanda High School, was built in 1955. In 1967, the New York State Legislature passed a bill to create a township within the Town of Scarsdale and it took effect that year. The Township's official name is Scarsdale Township (Voting District No. 1). As of the 2000 census, there were 6,873 people living in Scarsdale Township (Voting District No. 1). Of these, 3 percent were under the age of eighteen; 15 percent were sixty five years of age or older; 9 percent had one or more non-family children residing with them; and 79 percent were married couples living together.

Scarsdale, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Orange County and Westchester County. The population was 6,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European to settle in what is now Scarsdale was Gideon Green in 1776. He built a cabin near where Scarsdale Elementary School stands today. The village began as an agricultural community with land irrigated by canals running through it. In 1868, Trust Company president Nicholas Longworth purchased 8,000 acres (3 km²) east of Scarsdale Village from Jeremiah Wright for $10,000. This land would later form the nucleus of Central Park and be known as Longworth's Farm until 1915 when it became part of Scarsdale Village again. The first post office opened in 1871; it was called Northfield because there were no hills in that vicinity. The name "Scarsdale" was applied for the first time to the village by James Purdy in 1881 when he bought 5 acres (2 km²). The present spelling originated with one Mrs. Elisha Haring who set up a school at 422 Main Street on May 14th, 1892- three years after the original village meeting which decided upon this name change from Northfield to Scarsdale
