What is the history of the National Guard? The National Guard is a branch of the United States military that has been organized since 1789. The term “National Guard” was first used in articles of Confederation, which were adopted on July 4, 1781. At the time, militias were not nationalized and functioned as state militias. The states formed their own volunteer forces to support the new nation during and after its inception. In 1861, when Confederate States of America was created, the President Lincoln called for a National guard to protect Federal property in south Louisiana. On September 11th, 1861, 30000 men from thirteen states responded to President Lincoln’s call for service. In 1865-1866 there was also a call for 1 million men but this never happened because no one wanted to serve in an army that had surrendered at Appomattox Court House. In 1892-1893 Congress passed act calling for establishment of 6 ranger districts within each State under jurisdiction of governor with power to issue pardons and reprieves without warrants if necessary… These Acts authorized formation of provisional divisions (patrol) within state militias so that people could be removed from insurrectionary or terrorist activities should they occur outside their home state boundaries The modern day National Guard began as part of Regular Army when it was activated on November 16th 1917 by President Woodrow Wilson as part of World War I effort. It served through World War II untilactivated again on May 24th 1947 by President Harry S Truman following World War II’s end
