Saratoga Springs, New York is a small town in upstate New York, United States on the west bank of the Saratoga River. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1788 by General George Washington and his troops as Fort Clinton, after they destroyed an Indian village near what is now Saratoga Springs. The name "Saratoga" appears to be derived from one of several Algonquian words meaning "broad path through woods." In 1825, amid increasing pressure from settlers and politicians for more land to be granted in upstate New York, Congress passed the Land Act of 1825 which allocated 1 million acres (500 km²) of present-day Saratoga County and portions of Schoharie County to become a single county with its capital at Albany. On December 15, 1827, President James Kieft delivered the official plat for what would become Saratoga Springs as part of Albany Township. The town's first settler was Nicholas Simonson who arrived in April 1788 aboard HMS "Queen Charlotte". Although development began slowly due to lack of money and other constraints facing early settlers such as lack of transportation or water resources available along the river banks – including an abandoned mill site – progress was accelerated by entrepreneur Elias Stevens in 1830 when he established a ferry service between Saratoga Lake and downtown Albany making it possible for people to access downtown business without having to leave their homes. Stevens also built a gristmill that becamethe first commercial establishment in town; later additions included two stores and three hotels before becoming increasingly upscale with its own streetcar line connecting downtown with rural areas around it beginning in 1872. On July 14, 1850 local resident John Muir organized a group called "Friends" which purchased five hundred acres (2 km²) east of downtown along today's Main Street for $1 per acre (3 km²). As development continued throughout this century much residential growth occurred within walking distance or close enough via streetcar lines reaching out into every nook and cranny imaginable; eventually developing areas beyond today's boundaries were annexed by new municipalities including Westchester County following annexation exercises conducted during the 1960s among other things Withdrawal from statehood followed during Nixon years while continuing economic declines during more recent presidents produced social unrest culminating with arson fires occurring throughout 2014 surrounding Presidential haunts like White House lawns rather than localized protestations like those that took place elsewhere nearby
