Saratoga Springs, New York is a small town in upstate New York that is known for its springs and spa industry. The population was 5,502 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Saratoga meaning "haunted place" and Springs because of the number of hot water fountains throughout the community. The first springs were located near present-day Saratoga Springs in 1777 and were used to provide drinking water for soldiers marching through the area on their way to Battle of Saratoga. In 1815, John Cranch discovered oil shale in what is now Saratoga Springs and began producing oil from it. He built anoil refinery in nearby Schenectady and named it after himself, Saratoga Springs Refining Company Limited. The company became part of J P Morgan & Co in 1923. In 1881, a group of businessmen founded Anheuser Busch Brewery in nearby Springdale while still operating as AnheuserBusch Brewing Company Limited. This became one of the largest breweries in North America and has been owned by various families since its establishment including Seagrams Group plc., Oncale Energy Partners LP, InBev SA (Belgium), Heineken NV (Denmark) and Molson Coors Companies Incorporated (Canada). In 2002 Bev Oliphant purchased a controlling interest in AnheuserBusch Brewery which led to her becoming the first female CEO of a major US brewery when she was appointed Chief Operating Officer at King's County Brewing Company Ltd., Canada’s secondlargest craft brewer, on October 1st 2003. She resigned from her post on October 31st 2006 due to health reasons following years with very high stress levels at Bev Oliphant's corporation At King's County Brewing Company Ltd., Bev Oliphant also served as President from 2004 until her retirement effective January 1st 2007; she had been interim President since October 2001 when she succeeded outgoing president Linda Van Tasselt who had retired after many years with responsibility for both sides of the business operations - being Head Brewer/Operator/Manager - Operations Research & Development - Sales She continues to hold an appointment as Honorary Chairman emeritus until her death effective January 1st 2009 On February 15th 1861, Samuel Morse sent his famous Morse Code Signal over Niagara Falls using his private 4-wire telegraph line between Albany NY & Buffalo NY George Washington Carver moved his family from Maryland to Sarataga Springs during the Panic Of 1893 while he still lived there with his parents Nicolas Carver Sr & Mary Ann Morse George Washington Carver never fully recovered from this experience either physically or emotionally so he died young later that year around age 45 Howeverhis wife did become successful enough after his death that she opened up a large grocery store called "Carver's General Store" which prospered for many years next door to where George Washington Carver once stood

The post office at Saratoga Springs was established in 1792, and named for General John Burgoyne, who had surrendered to George Washington at Saratoga Gap on October 17, 1777. The first school was built in 1819 and the first church (the First Congregational) in 1827. The town became a village in 1889. At its peak as of 2010, Saratoga Springs had a population of 961 people.
