The Saratoga Springs army post was established in 1814 and played an important role in the development of American military culture. The post fought various wars, including the American Revolution, during which it received credit for its success. After the Revolutionary War, the army moved to Saratoga Springs and soon became one of the most important centers of military activity in New York State. In 1798, General George Washington ordered a new artillery regiment to be raised here and named after Saratoga Springs. The regiment served until 1800 when it was disbanded because of its small size. However, in 1802-03 a new artillery regiment was raised at Fort Clinton and given the name of “Saratoga Regiment”. This unit participated in two campaigns against France (1804-05 and 1807-08) and played an important role in later American Wars. After the war ended, many soldiers from this regiment left Saratoga Springs for other postings throughout New York State. In 1821, a separate brigade of infantry was raised at Fort Niagara under command of Colonel Augustus Van Schaick and garrisoned at that post for several years before being transferred to Valley Forge where it played an important role in defeating British forces there on October 14th, 1777. In 1861, following secessionist movements within America, President Abraham Lincoln called up all available troops across America for what would become known asthe Civil War; within days of his proclamation martial law had been declared throughout much of New York state. At Fort Clinton garrisoned 2nd Ulysses S Grant’s division which helped lead to Union victory over Confederate armies northward towards Baltimore City on April 9th 1865; thanks largely to Generals John Pope’s brigade commander Major General James Longstreet who personally led his division through thickets along drawn lines – often under sniper fire – leading up to that triumphal entry into Baltimore City!
