In 1830–1831, rye built a gristmill on Front Street which continues to be Operated today by the Rye Grinding Mill Museum Incorporated (www). In 1835–1836, Rye constructed a sawmill on State Road 9 opposite Main Street which still operates today as part of Dansk Sawmills LLP (www). In 1847–1848, Rye completed construction of a new courthouse replacing an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier; it remains one of only two remaining original buildings from that period in town On November 3rd 1890 while residents were celebrating Star-Spangled Banner Day with dinner at Union Presbyterian Church they heard shots ring out followed soon thereafter by screams and then flames coming down Elmwood Ave where their church used to stand !!!! within minutes everyone was running outside including many women who had gathered around our female pastoress daughter Mrs Connellan there she sheltered under a tree until we got back inside I told her mom when we came out I seen all these people running around like chickens with their heads cut off . So we went back into house ate dinner then started reconstruction work
