Rye is a town in New York State. It was first settled by English colonists in 1624, and became a part of the United States in 1787. The town is located on the north bank of the Hudson River, about 26 miles (41 km) west of Manhattan. Rye has a population of approximately 30,000 people. The Town of Rye was chartered on November 12, 1624, by John Winthrop and his fellow Pilgrim settlers as part of what would become the Province of New York. In 1874,RYE lost its charter to form Village Of Westchester but regained it in 1908 when village status was granted to all villages that had been within east Hudson County before County formed on December 1st 1874.. In 1922–23, during World War II – as tensions mounted between Great Britain and America – rye production increased significantly due to requisitioning by the military for food supplies. By 1945 more than 5 million bushels (27 metric tons) had been produced in Rye alone; this amount helped contribute to overall local grain production that year which totaled 771 thousand bushels (29 metric tons). Today's economy is based largely on tourism with several businesses providing services such as restaurants etc., providing jobs for many people who formerly worked at those businesses directly or indirectly related thereto; however there are no major industries currently active in or around Rye which could generate significant tax revenue for its government coffers.
