Rye is a town in Wyoming County, New York, located on the north shore of Long Island Sound. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Queens. The first Europeans to visit Rye were Dutch traders who landed there in 1624 and 1627. English settlers arrived in 1714 and founded the town of Hempstead on Long Island Sound. The first store opened in Rye on December 15, 1714 by Nicholas Conte and Others. In 1718 Nathan Hale, an American Revolutionary War patriot, was born here. In 1847, the Erie Railroad built a railway through Rye station making it possible for people to get goods to markets outside of New York City. The factory that now produces rye flour became operational in 1857 and soon became one of the leading producers of this type of flour in America. In 1957, IBM began production at its new facility adjacent to Main Street which continues to produce rye flour today under contract with several other companies. The current business district around Main Street began as farmland near Fordham University when construction began on what would become known as IBM's "Fabulous Factory." This area included a large tract bounded by Boulevard (now Jericho Road), Park Avenue (now Waverly Place), Vernon Blvd., Throop Ave., and Grand Army Plaza; all developed into neighborhoods duringIBM's heyday thanks largely to IBM themselves -setting an example for later industrial developers throughout Queens Boroughs alike..... Today much smaller parts still remain scattered among these older neighborhoods: buildings from Main Street’s early days cluster along Jericho Road between Boulevard and Vernon Blvd.; former IBM offices down Park Avenue between Throop Ave./Grand Army Plaza/Waverly Place; while remnants from elsewhere can be found around Boulevard/Vernon Blvd./Grand Army Plaza/Waverly Place NW
