The Coast Guard has been in Rome, New York since 1872. The first time the Coast Guard was stationed in Rome was in 1892 when it arrived to help with the California Gold Rush. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station Rome was opened and is still used today. It wasn't until 1971 that the Coast Guard Station Naples replaced the Station Rome. In 1978, a new station called Hampton Roads was opened on Long Island so that all of Ashtabula County could be treated as one district for law enforcement purposes. In 1984, a new station called Sayville was opened on Long Island which became home to both Headquarters and Patrol Base Sayville until 2006 when it was moved to Patchogue Harbour on Suffolk County because of budget cuts. In 2007, another new station called Ronkonkoma came online in Syracuse and is now responsible for all of Eastchester County including Babylon and East Northport. In 2013, a new Command Center/HQ was constructed next to NAS Riverhead in Riverhead village which is also home to Patrol Base Hicksburg which has jurisdiction over Milford Haven Harbor and parts of Onondaga Lake Shoreline
