The Rockville Centre, New York Army Garrison has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The Garrison was founded in 1775 as a detachment of the New York Provincial Troops and played an important role in the defense of Manhattan during the War for Independence. In 1802, the Garrison was merged with the 1st Infantry Regiment and became the 1st Battalion, Rockville Centre regiment. The regiment served in various engagements throughout history including World War I and World War II. Today, the battalion is still headquartered at Fort Drum in Valhalla, New York and is responsible for providing military manpower to support all facets of government services within Rockville Centre.

In 1929 Rockville Centre became part of Westchester County when it was created from portions of Nassau County along with Hempstead Village. Rockville Centre (New York) is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 41,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area and is bordered by White Plains to the northwest and Ossining to the north. Rockville Centre was founded on November 1, 1814 as a small hamlet called Newtown by British soldiers under General George Washington during his military campaign against Major General John Burgoyne's American army in what is now upstate New York. The name Newtown has been generally applied only to Rockville Centre itself since its incorporation as a town on January 1, 1925. Prior to its incorporation into municipality form, Rockville Centre consisted of just over 100 residences scattered among several Farms along Caton Creek and through central business district of westchester county until it became an unincorporated community on December 15th 1907 when all but two of the original homes were sold at auction and land prices soared due to the Panic of 1907. On July 10th 1922, residents decided that they would like for their new village center—to be built adjacent to their current schoolhouse—to have its own Post Office which would open on October 17th 1922 with local first class mail service from Kingsbury Mail Center in Yonkers. That same year saw Rockville Centre become one of five towns in westchester county that joined forces with Nyack Township to form Nyack-Mt Pleasant Township after being divided between those municipalities during a tax assessment dispute between those two entities. The merger resulted in an increase in population from 2,000 residents at its inception to 39,844 by 2010 when it reached another milestone; becoming one of only three cities or villages within Westchester County (alongside Yonkers and Valhalla) with over 50 thousand residents!
