The National Guard of New York City was first organized in 1792. The guard was made up of men from the towns and villages near the city, as well as soldiers from other parts of the United States. The guards were used for a variety of purposes, including protection against Indian raids, guarding government buildings, and serving in military campaigns. TheGuard organization changed its name to the National Guardsman in 1815. In that year, Congress passed a bill authorizing the mobilization of the Guard for a three-year period. The law allowed for an initial raise of $1 million to be issued by Congress. This money was used to purchase uniforms and equipment for the Guard. In 1824, President James K. Polk created a permanent National Guard Division in New York City under Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. The division consisted of five brigades–the 1st Brigade (Heavy), 2nd Brigade (Light Infantry), 3rd Brigade (Volunteer Infantry), 4th Brigade (Artillery), and 5th Brigade (Infantry). Extra units were called up during World War I and World War II; however, all active duty troops within the National Guardsmenwere disbanded on September 30th,, 1966 when it was announced that Army Reserve formations would take precedence over Regular Army units in Manhatten Military Districts
