By 1915, Hapgood had built a large empire of grocery stores across upstate New York including stores in Buffalo and Syracuse. During World War I, Hapgood supplied Rome with beans for its military forces; this led to him being known as "the man who gave Italy its morning caffeine." In 1924, he sold his company to Jell-O Corporation for $2 million dollars ($101 million today). Jell-O continued to distribute Fresh Rested Coffee until it discontinued production in 1978. In 1912, National Roasters merged with another company named Boston Coffee Company and they started selling roasted beans from their own roasting plant in northwest Rochester. In 1916, National Roasters merged with another company named Peet’s Coffee Company and they started selling roasted beans from their own roasting plant in central New York City. In 1927, National Roasters began selling espresso drinks under the name ESpressos which became very successful for them. They continued to sell espresso drinks until 1971 when they decided to discontinue production due to changing tastes within the espresso drink market.
