Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of New York, with an population of over 165,000 as of 2010. The metropolitan area has a population of over 300,000. It is part of the Rochester-Yonkers-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rochester were Dutch in 1624 and English in 1628. In 1701, General George Washington passed through on his way from Manhattan to Boston and called it "the most flourishing town in America" because its citizens had built up a large trade with Great Britain. The town was laid out by James Strachan in 1716 on land that he purchased from the Mohawk tribe. The original name for the town was Fort Orange but changed to Rochester soon after when Governor Peter Stuyvesant gave the order for all new towns within five miles (8 km) of New York City to have their names changed at his behest. By 1725, the influx of settlers had made Rochester one of the largest settlements in New York State and it became an incorporated village on April 12, 1726 under Act No. 9 of that year which granted civil rights to Native Americans living east of Seneca Lake as well as white men who had come into possession thereof since British withdrawal from North America two years earlier at Lexington and Concord.
