Poughkeepsie, New York is a small town in the state of New York. The population was 3,691 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mohawk River. Poughkeepsie is one of three towns in upstate New York that remain part of the same municipality despite having different borders - the other two are Kingston and Auburn. Poughkeepsie has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 2,000 years. In 1614, English settlers arrived in what is now Poughkeepsie and began trading with the local tribe. The first Europeans to live in present-day Poughkeepsie were Dutch colonists who founded a fur trader's post there in 1624. The British gained control of North America following their victory at Saratoga against Spanish forces in 1776. The British government decided to move all American Indians east of the Appalachian Mountains into concentration camps as part of its western policy known as "Indian Removal". This meant that many Native Americans living west of the Appalachians were forced to move too - some went as far asToeplitz, New York, where they became known as "Trail People." In 1802, Congress passed an act recognizing Indian Territory and creating a new district within it - this area now includes most of central and eastern Upstate New York. In 1825, when white settlers began moving into what is now Poughkeepsie from northwestern Ontario, they started calling it "Cattaraugus." By 1830, when Poughkeepzie had a population of 1,500 residents and 100 businesses), Cattaraugus had become more popularly identified with POUGHKEEPSIE because it was thought that this name would provide protection from Indian attack should any European settlement be established thereabouts; however no such attacks ever took place. On July 15th 1831 (the day after independence was granted to America), Micmac Chief Joseph Monahan issued a proclamation from his home near modern-day Utica announcing his intention to dissolve all municipal boundaries between Utica and Syracuse so that he could unite both settlements under one roof under the banner of "POUGHKEEPSIE" or "Monahanstown." On September 12th 1832 (four days after President Andrew Johnson issued his executive order Printing Offishall's Report on Affairs among Indians within our District)), Monahan submitted written complaints about acts done by Utica Mayor James Aiken which he believed violated federal law pertaining to Indian lands; these complaints led to increased tensions between Utica and Syracuse mayors beginning in early October1832 culminating with Aiken's arrest on November 5th 1832 for disorderly conduct charges during an election campaign stop atUtica's Market Street store). From then until 1865 when Alexander Hamilton unilaterally dissolved all municipal boundaries between UtICA and SYRACUSE due to differences over water rights issues (and also because NY State Assemblymember John Atwater wanted Syracuse City Limits expandedsouthward beyond currentUtica limits while maintaining Syracuse's traditional boundary line running northeasterly from downtown through Riverside Parkto Genesee Park), POUGHKEEPSIE effectively constituted only one community within two separate municipalities - something few people initially realized or cared about given its small size relative to larger neighborsto which it was attached geographically (approximately 8 miles wide by 4 miles deep). Today remnants of original CATTARAGUS infrastructure can still be seen throughout much rural areasof central & eastern UPSTATE NEW YORK including portionsOf Mohawk Valley & Schenectady County; these villages (& their associated hamlets) continue TO CALL themselves 'POUGHKEEPSIES'.

Poughkeepsie, New York is a city in the state of New York and the seat of Dutchess County. The population was ceremony at 716,844 as of the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie is one of the five boroughs of New York City. The borough's name is derived from Powhatan Chief Powhatan's advice to his son-in-law, George Washington, that "a good place to build a town" should be onwy by the Mohawk River. Poughkeepsie became an incorporated village in 1824 and was reincorporated as a city in 1853. It operates as its own government with its own police force and city council. The history of Poughkeepsie goes back more than 350 years to English colonists who established a small trading post on what is now downtown Poughkeepsie in 1664. In 1785, during King George III's American Revolution, British forces burned down the old trading post and replaced it with Fort George on Castle Hill overlooking present-day downtown Poughkeepsie. The first permanent settler came to this area in 1793 when Samuel Gregg built a farmstead on what is today known as Broadway Street near where he later erected another farmstead called Gregg’s Neck Road (now State Office Park Drive). Portsmouth native Nicholasuser Putnam also arrived here early in 1800s and started raising chickens for eggs and meat products from his barn south of Main Street. By 1812 there were about 30 families living here; by 1830 there were 180 residents here including many recent arrivals from England or Scotland like John Macdonald (1795–1868), father of Canadian Prime Minister Sir John Auld (1859–1932). In 1824 Poughkeepsie became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Dutchess County because section 4a within Town Law 5 violated article XVIII, section 2(b) of the new Constitution which granted voting rights to women over 21 years old dating back to 1792 when Connecticut ratified the United States Constitution while still part of Great Britain! Not content with having no say in their own affairs, incorporationists lobbied hard for passage of acts creating municipal government so they could have some control over their destiny! On July 1st 1825 duly licensed electors met at Masonic Hall (now First Congregational Church) located at 217 Nassau Street – three days after incorporation – cast ballots “to establish principles & regulations respecting elections & meetings” . Elections were held November 3rd but due to lack turnout no action was taken! Incorporationists remain incensed about these proceedings ever taking place despite protestations from Mayor Charles Wadleigh (1798–1867), who already had experience running local governments thanks to his workman’s comp exclusion case against Bucket Brewery owner Ebenezer Sibley Jr., one year earlier! It wasn’t until 1840 when voters passed an act allowing two wardens each instead of just one providing much needed revenue for infrastructure improvements including sewers etc…that democracy truly began in Poughkeepsie!! After being bypassed by other municipalities such as Troy due mainly to lack funding stymied efforts at developign into a major industrial center like Troy did not materialize until after World War II when Yankee Motors moved their operations into newly created Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute adjacent thereto putting pressure on neighboring towns such as Guilderland which saw rapid growth following auto production transferred away from Troy> In 1965 riots broke out throughout Harlem resulting in several fatalities although no property damage occurred
Poughkeepsie was first settled in the mid-17th century by English colonists. The town began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, and by 1830 Poughkeepsie had reached its peak population. However, during the Panic of 1837, many people left Poughkeepsie for economic reasons. In 1840, Poughkeepsie became a city and continued to grow rapidly; by 1860 it had over 100,000 residents. After the American Civil War, Poughkeepsie became an important manufacturing center thanks to its mills and steel production. In the late 20th century, however, Poughkeepzie's economy declined as a result of factors such as aging infrastructure and competition from other towns in New York State.
