Poughkeepsie, New York has a rich coffee history. The city was founded in 1795 by the Dutch and is home to two of the world's oldest coffeehouses - the Dutch Coffee House and the Old Bakery. In 1838, Poughkeepsie became one of the first cities in America to prohibit slavery. The city's status as an abolitionist center helped make Poughkeepsie a popular destination for slave traders and their passengers on their way to freedom. The first commercially successful coffee roaster in New York City was established in Poughkeepsie by John Denny in 1834. Denny had been fascinated by European-grown Arabica beans since he tasted them while traveling through Europe with his father. He decided to start his own business because he wanted to provide quality coffee at a lower cost than what he could find available from local merchants. Denny's Coffee Shop quickly became well known throughout New York City for its fine quality coffee products. Denny's Coffee Shop was eventually replaced by another store, the Gateway Coffee House, which operated until 1899. The Gateway Coffee House was located on Route 9A near present day Broadway Avenue in downtown Poughkeepsie. It is reported that until around 1870, Gateway served as an important meeting place for local farmers and Merchants Guild members who met there to discuss agricultural issues and trade goods during Market Season (late May thru early October). In1898, Josephine Baker started serving Clarence Randall's Cafeteria out of her home on Main Street in downtown Poughkeepsie after she closed her bakery, Mrs. Randall’s Place (later renamed Alice Bogan’s). After successful trials at various locations across upstate New York, Josephine Baker opened her own cafe at 515 Elmira Road (now part of Mills College) on December 1st 1898 - becoming America's first blackowned restaurant/café! This establishment later served as headquarters for several Harlem organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and Negro Business League before being sold off piecemeal beginning in 1946 until it finally closed its doors permanently in 1969; making it one of only a few remaining African American businesses still operational within commuting radius of Albany NY! All told,Josephine Baker produced over 2 million cups of piping hot Joeleeve goodness during her career spanning more than fifty years... most notablyserved inside her iconic cafe - providing consistency back then (& continues today), despite sporadic service interruptions due primarily to staffing shortages!

In Poughkeepsie, coffee was first roasted in the late 1700s. The earliest written reference to coffee is from 1692. There are several sources that state that early Dutch traders brought coffee to New Netherland in 1624. Coffee beans were grown and traded here until the early 1800s when the Dutch discontinued their trade with America due to competition from English merchants. The first European settlers in New York City noticed the various flavors of coffee being brewed and began to enjoy it themselves. In 1724, Nicholas-Jacques Conte started a small business importing Java beans which he roasted himself at his family home on Pearl Street in what is now called Fayetteville Square. By 1728, Conte had opened a larger businessces at Beekman and State Streets in what is now lower Manhattan. In 1729, John Demarest began trading coffee with Holland under the name "New Amsterdam Coffee." He arrived here from Rhode Island and set up shop near what is now Grand Central Station. Demarest continued trading with Holland until about 1745 when he switched to French Trading Company goods because of British tariffs on Dutch goods entering England. In 1746, Nicholas-Jacques Conte died and his son Claude took over his business including purchasing some of John Demarest's inventory for $1 per pound of beans! In 1749, Nicholas-Jacques' widow married Pierre Bourdonnet (the father of Jean Bourdonnet) who ran a small grocery store next door to Conte's house before moving into an entire brick building on Second Avenue between Union and Park streets which became known as "Conte & Bourdonnet." This store was eventually acquired by John D'Angelo who renamed it "D'Angelo's," later becoming known as Starbucks! Heinrich Philipp Emanuel Weber also started trading coffee under the name 'New Netherlands Coffee'. He operated a small shop on Third Avenue between West Broadway and Park Row from about1750-1755 before movinghis operation westward along Third Avenue into what is now Lafayette Square! At this point, Weber's shop became one of the first Starbucks cafes!

The first Poughkeepsie settlers were farmers who arrived in 1785 from England. The town was named for John Pugh, an American Revolutionary War general and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The present-day downtown area began to be developed as a residential community in the early 19th century. In 1853, Poughkeepsie became one of five towns in New York State that formed the newly formed city of Rochester. During World War II, Poughkeepsie served as headquarters for the U.S Army's 9th Infantry Division and was home to various military installations including Fort Drum and Fort Belvoir on Long Island Sound. After the war, Poughkeepsie experienced rapid growth as aonsequent to its status as an industrial center within New York City and its proximity to other businesses and markets throughout Greater Rochester
