The New York State Coast Guard was formed in 1903 as the Harbor and Marine Patrol, an arm of the state Department of Transportation. Poughkeepsie, New York is a city in New York State and the county seat of Westchester County. The population was 1,635 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie is located on the Hudson River, just south of Albany. The name Poughkeepsie comes from Old Englishmeaning "the place where mice live." The first Europeans to visit what is now Poughkeepsie were Dutch traders in 1624. They named it Haverstraw after their leader Hendrick Janszoon Haverkamp, who had been captured by the English and brought to America as part of the Beaver Wars. In 1764, James Kieft founded a small military outpost on Bridge Creek that became known as Fort George Washington. In 1792, Poughkeepsie became part of New York City following its purchase from the Crown by John Jay and Alexander Hamilton. In 1814, during the War of 1812, American General James Wilkinson attacked British forces at Fort George Washington with his 23rd Infantry Regiment under Colonel Nicholas Cooke while supplies were being unloaded on board HMS Vengeance for bombardment by Admiral David Farragut's USS Constitution off Long Island Sound; this event is commemorated with a plaque on fortifications near modern-day Brooklyn Heights that reads "Here came Lexington & Bunker Hill". During World War II many factories in nearby Sleepy Hollow produced munitions used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki; however these plants have all closed down since then and only a few relics remain from their days as manufacturing sites. During Mayor Fiorenzo Carbonell's administration (1995-2001), Poughkeepsie underwent significant redevelopment that spanned more than $100 million dollars including bringing new sewage treatment plants online; rebuilding state-of-the-art libraries within city limits; creating new public housing developments such as Jericho Terrace and Castle Gardens; construction of several major streetscape projects such as Route 9A/9B between Main Street/Wadsworth Avenue and Broadway/Westchester Avenue; renovation of Parkside Drive which has become one of downtown's most popular shopping areas; expansion roundabout project which added two lanes onto Main Street between Wadsworth Avenue and Park Slope Boulevard; addition of lighted bike lanes along Wadsworth Avenue between Federal Plaza/Broadway Station and Prospect Park North - making it one of Manhattan's most vibrant bicycle corridors POUGHKEEPSIE’S STORY began with hard work – before anything else there was farming! Over time large families would move upriver or down to find land enough to support them while also caring for livestock until they could send their children off to college or start businesses themselves (and sometimes both). With so much activity happening around them day & night there was always something left over for baking goods or brewing beer: “poultry pie” would be baked fresh every morning fresh out of eggs when people got up early for work – no matter how hot it got outside! Finally some thought went into what would happen when those chickens stopped laying eggs? Would someone have to buy them? And if so who? Eventually someone decided to keep these big fluffy birds but feed them different food instead because they didn’t really have anything else better to do! From here things progressed slowly but surely: people started coming up with ideas about what could be done with this extra land… like turning it into an amusement park complete with rides & games! And we know today that all those wonderful neighborhoods we see today didn’t actually form until after WWI when developers decided this area needed some development because nobody wanted any more farmland around here anyways!
Poughkeepsie was founded in 1664 by the Dutch as a trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan. It grew quickly as a commercial center, and during the 17th century it became one of New York City's most important financial and political centers. The town was renamed Poughkeepsie in 1785 after James Poultney, an American Revolutionary War general. In 1814, Poughkeepsie became part of the new state of New York following its admission to the Union. It was renamed again in 1916 to honor British General John Jellicoe, who had helped lead New York into the war against Germany.
