Poughkeepsie, New York is home to Fort Knox and the Army's largest artillery battery. The Battery in 1854 was the site of the first military engagement between the United States and Great Britain. Today, the Battery houses a museum and is used as an event center for local events. In 1916, Poughkeepsie was selected as one of six cities in New York state to become a part of World War I effort (the others being Yonkers, Westchester County, Schenectady County, Albany County). The soldiers from Battery A were deployed to France with other units in October 1916. After arriving there they were demobilized on November 1st and returned home December 15th. In 1919, Poughkeepsie became home to another large artillery battery when Battery C was mobilized at Fort Hamilton. That same year it also became known as "The Big Green" because of its color - green! In 1941-1942, two more artillery batteries – Batteries K and L – were activated at Ft Worth Army Air Field in Texas; however these guns never left New York City but remained at Fort Knox until their retirement in 1956.
