Port Chester, New York is a town in the Town of Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 23,801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what would become Port Chester were Dutch traders and fishermen who arrived in 1624 as part of the Hudsons Bay Company's effort to establish a fur trading post on Long Island Sound. The place name "Port Chester" was given to them by their leader Hendrick Hudson because they foundered on the cape that now bears its name. In 1764, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's forces burned much of what is now Port Chester after capturing it from British forces under Lieutenant-General John Burgoyne. The town became an important military base for many years until it was closed in 1815 after a large fire destroyed most of the buildings in downtown. In 1817, Congress passed a law providing for township organization and creating Westchester County out of parts of Ulster and Nassau counties. In 1831, when President Andrew Jackson appointed Moses Sherman as commissioner to survey new townships within Westchester County he also recommended that Port Chester be included within those boundaries; however Sherman died before his recommendations could be implemented. In 1830–1832 another commission surveyed all present-day Westchester County and recommended including Port Chester within it; this time President James Kapp approved the recommendation and incorporated the town into Westchester County on February 15th, 1833 (). The town has experienced several periods of growth throughout its history: beginning with small numbers during World War II due to wartime industrial production; reaching peak populations around 1960 due to increased commuting into New York City; declining since then as more people left for other large cities or moved away altogether; but starting anew since 2000 as single family homes have replaced factories and other heavy industry along center streets such as Main Street () while new businesses have opened up in various neighborhoods east and west of Center Road (). Navy deployed gift history goes back to World War II. In 1942, the United States Navy created a Gift Division within the Bureau of Ships. The Naval Affairs Branch served as the Commanding Officer of this division and it was responsible for all aspects of naval gifts, from personal reminiscences to warships and other military hardware. Gifts were often sent to sailors in ports around the world, and there are many interesting stories surrounding these shipments. One particular branch of the navy that received a lot of gift sends during WWII was aviation. On December 6th, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor devastating Hawaii with an attack that killed over 50% of the population and left over 700 people dead. The United States had been warned about this potential threat by Japan, but they did notyet have any planes or ships capable of fighting against them on their own soil. This led to America needing help from abroad in order to fight against Japan. On December 12th, 1941, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 10952 which ordered National Defense Council staff to develop plans for creating armor for American troops overseas (this order is most commonly remembered for President Roosevelt’s decision to send American soldiers into World War II). Two weeks later on December 16th, Roosevelt passed Executive Order 11011 which called for donations from businesses in support of war efforts including materials such as gasoline oil and rubber products (these donations would go towards helping America build tanks and other military equipment). Finally on December 20th, Roosevelt Signed Executive Order 11246 which created two new branches within the navy-the Aviation Branch and Supply Division-both tasked with developing naval aviation capabilities worldwide. Port Chester is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Port Chester was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he explored the area for trade with the Pequot Indians. In 1664, John Montresor of England established a trading post here and named it after himself, but no town developed from this until 1798 when James Clinton founded Clinton Village on what is now Washington Street. In 1814, General Henry Dearborn built a fortification here and called it Fort Niagara after his victory over Andrew Jackson at Vicksburg on July 4th that year. The village rapidly grew into a major commercial center due to its location between Buffalo and Niagara Falls and its rich agricultural history. In 1832, the town became an incorporated place under the name of Cherry Hill; however, this name never caught on and it reverted back to Port Chester in 1881. After several failed attempts by incorporation promoters to make it an international city with a strong commercial base (e.g., via annexing much larger towns such as Seneca Falls or Schenectady), in 1902 Port Chester proper was annexed byBuffalo as part of an overall attempt by New York State to create an integrated metropolitan area across all five counties which would encompass all of Buffalo–Niagara Falls jurisdiction as well as most of Erie County except for Orchard Park in western Monroe County Today’s vibrant waterfront district around Congress Avenue includes some world-famous tourist attractions like the USS Constitution Museum (opened in 1978), Herron House (a former home used by President Woodrow Wilson), Guggenheim Museum (opened in 1997) and art galleries like MoMA/New York City’s High Line complex adjacent to Oneonta ICE Depot also contribute significantly to Port Chester’s economy while also providing important public services like senior care facilities, libraries etc.- thus making it one of North America’s most livable communities while still being one of its largest cities
The town of Port Chester, New York was founded in 1795 by John D’Alberto and his family. The town was named for the pejorative term "Port-cochere" which meant "the entrance to a cove." At its peak in 1800, the population of Port Chester numbered over 10,000 people. However, the town's prosperity decreased after the American Revolution and during the 19th century it only experienced a modest level of growth. In 1892, the need for workers on Long Island necessitated the relocation of many residents from Port Chester to Nassau County. This led to a significant decrease in population at Port Chester. In 1916, an act was passed that designated all land within 1 mile of either shoreline as parkland. Since then, much of what is now downtown Portchester has been developed as part of this parkland.
