The area that is now Port Chester was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans in the late 17th century. The village of Easton grew up around this site, and it was renamed Port Chester in 1792 after a Major General George Clinton's expedition passed through the area on their way to conquest of New York. In 1814, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt founded his shipping company at what is now called Commodore Vanderbilt's Wharf. This sparked what would become known as the great Erie Canal Boom, which led to increased trade and development in the region. In 1827, President James K. Polk sent a military force to invade Canada during the height of the Mexican-American War. The battle for Mexico City ended with a victory for United States forces, and as a result, Port Chester became an important American military base. After Mexico withdrew from America in 1848, there wasn't much economic activity focused on Port Chester until after World War II when new industries such as shipbuilding began to emerge.
