Port Chester, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 40,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1634. It was incorporated as a village in 1812 and as a city on December 12, 1825. As a city it lost its charter in 1830 and became an unincorporated community again until it became a town on January 1, 1903. In 1907 it had the distinction of becoming one of only two U.S. towns to be awarded Tax Increment financing (TIF) for development projects pursuant to the 1916 Local Improvement District Act Amendments passed by Congress following the Panic of 1907. In recent years Port Chester has become known for its annual "Fiesta" parade which takes place on September 15th each year from downtown to Green Island Park across from the high school gymnasium where floats are parked and dancers perform throughout Downtown Port Chester until about 9pm before returning to downtown for another performance around 10pm or so
