The Continental Congress commissioned George Washington as the first U.S. President, and he decided to establish a navy to protect America’s interests in the world. In 1798, Congress created the Department of War which was responsible for all naval operations. In 1801, the USS Constitution was built and served as America’s first warship. The USS Constitution was also the first ship in American waters to be fitted with cannons. At this time, Americans were beginning to become familiar with warfare and realized that warships were essential for their security and future growth as a nation. In 1805, Commodore John Huckleberry ordered Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to buildUSS Louisville at Newport News Shipbuilding Company on Virginia Beachou in Hampton Roads because he believed that a large navy would make America more powerful financially and militarily. The USS Louisville served as America’s flagship during its engagements against Britain during the War of 1812 although she never fired her guns. In 1819-20 Commodore James Longstreet sailed his squadron of ships from Charleston Harbor in South Carolina into Chesapeake Bayto attack British shipping off Norfolk Island but unfortunately did not return home after capturing nine vessels including HMS Guerriereand HMS Enterprise (of which only one survived). This event is widely considered to be one of the most successful naval operations undertaken by American forces during World War IIand is often cited as one of Commodore Longstreet’s finest achievementsas an admiral . Navy ships have been present in Plattsburgh since the days of Commodore Perry, who in 1853 laid anchor on the now-defunct Block Island Naval Station. The first Navy ship to arrive in town was USS Constitution, which arrived on October 15, 1797. The USS Bainbridge, a commissioned vessels from New York City's Custom House Squadron (later, the NYPD), also came to Plattsburgh for supplies and repairs during the Revolutionary War. In 1812, Commodore John D. Sloat led a squadron of eight warships against French frigates off Long Island Sound; all eight ships were destroyed by cannon fire. In 1814–15 Commodore David Farragut fought an engagement with French Privateer La Gironde near Sagadour Islands; five American warships were destroyed by small caliber fire from La Gironde's seventy-four guns.
Plattsburgh is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Platt'sburgh in Scotland and means "the place where the platters are boiled." The first permanent settler in what is now Plattsburgh was Nicholas Saracen in 1777. He built a small log cabin on the west bank of the Unadilla River. In 1802, Captain John Stevens founded the village of Plattsburgh to house settlers who had come overland from Canada during the Canadan Revolution. The village developed into an attractive port town with a busy harbor and well-developed commercial district. By 1870, Plattsburgh had become one of five towns in Onondaga County. In 1868, General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit attacked and killed several Indian scouts near Plattsburgh while under cover of darkness. This event led to great public outcry against military operations along the border of Indian Territory and made it necessary for Governor Elias Dyson to call a state convention to ratify arrangements made between him and President Andrew Johnson concerning military occupation of that area by Ulysses S Grant’s forces. At this Convention, held at Syracuse on October 8-10th, 1868 (the same day as General Custer’s famous “ scalpduck” attack on White House Cemetery), resolutions were passed authorizing violence against Native Americans if they resisted Ulysses S Grant’s military presence within bounds set by Congress pursuant to Article IV of the Constitution of New York; these resolutions also provided for impeachment proceedings should such resistance take place outside the boundaries set by Congress. On July 5th 1870 (just two years after its incorporation as a town),Plattsburgh voted 7-3 in favor of annexation by Syracuse City because it felt that Syracuse would be more efficient government than having five separate municipalities with different agendas and services available only to residents within its borders – something that residents did not want or needed given their location on Lake Ontario just outside Syracuse city limits! When annexation became effective on September 1st 1870 (following full ratification by all five towns involved),Plymouth became one municipality! This rapid growth was due largely to Hudson's Bay Company influence which helped contribute $5 million dollars worth of goods exported through Albany - Buffalo - Rochester - Utica Ports between 1865 & 1880 alone! The PLATTSBURGH PORT DISTRICT ACT OF 1889 created new regulations surrounding transportation connecting upstate New York with Buffalo - Rochester - Utica Ports via Plattsburgh Canal; this act caused much economic stagnation as shippingers refused to transport goods farther north given increased competition from Erie Canal traffic coming downriver directly from Canada! However, following passage of the Lumber Act 1902 which introduced compulsory licensing for lumber production north of Interstate 90, shipbuilding activity revived beginning around 1910 becoming very significant until World War II when moves towards mechanized production began making traditional wood products increasingly unavailable; today there remains some residual Shipbuilding activity taking place off shore but most done using modern machinery

Plattsburgh, New York is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,391 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from George Washington's birthplace and home during his childhood. The town is located on the Mohawk River south of Schenectady. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Plattsburgh were fur traders who arrived in 1711. By 1715, the area had been divided into two settlements: Plattsburgh (then called "Northumberland") and Schenectady (then called "New Scotland"). In 1727, both settlements were merged into one larger community under the leadership of Captain John Smith as part of a effort to consolidate Hudson's Bay Company posts throughout New Netherland. The General Assembly granted land for development in 1814; however, no construction began until after the American Civil War because funding was unavailable from Congress. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and increased traffic on the river following settlement by farmers and entrepreneurs alike, platted towns such as Auburn (now Oswego), Scotia Heights (now South Glens Falls), and Canandaigua sprang up along both sides of the canal while Plattsburgh slowly lost its importance as an agricultural center until it regained it with annexations by other communities duringWorld War II. After 1945, Plattsburgh became an important commercial center with manufacturing businesses moving into nearby Saratoga Springs and East Aurora while still retaining some cultural attractions including summertime concerts at Lake George park or downtown movie theaters.
