Plattsburgh, New York is an unincorporated community in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Erie Canal and lies about south of the city of Buffalo. The Plattsburgh area has been settled by Native Americans for many years before European exploration began in 1614. A trading post was established here in 1624 by French traders Pierre Le Moyne and René-Jacques Marquette. The first Europeans to live permanently in what is now Plattsburgh were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1716. They built a mill on the then known site of present-day Plattsburgh and called it "Heerenwyk". In 1764, Captain George Washington's forces evacuated Fort Niagara after its capture by British forces during the Seven Years' War. In 1827, President James K. Polk sent Major General John Cushing with orders to build a road from Lewiston through Auburn to Syracuse as part of his plan to open up new land west of Buffalo for settlement by American farmers. On July 5, 1827, construction began on what would become US Route 810 (now Interstate 87). The town platted as Plattsburgh on January 12, 1830 under US District Judge Augustus Grote and named for Rear Admiral Samuel Farragut (1794–1868), who had commanded American forces at Battle of Lake Erie during the war against Great Britain In 1840s and 1850s a number of mills were destroyed due to lack of competition or lack of investors but others such as Phelps Dodge Company resumed production until around 1900 when it closed down again due to pollution from their factory operations . A small community developed around one abandoned mill which continued until around 1910 when it also ceased production because its founder died without children able to take over operations

The town's first permanent settler was Captain John Graves who arrived in 1724 and founded Gravesend on the north bank of the Mohawk River. In 1727, Captain John Graves' grandson, Peter Graves bought lands in what is now Plattsburgh from the Mohawk Indians for $1 per acre (0.50¢ sterling). At this time, there were only a few scattered families living in and around what is now Plattsburgh. In 1814, as part of Great Britain's war with France, General James Wolfe invaded Canada and landed at Quebec City with his army of over 100,000 men including 10 warships and 350 transports carrying supplies and troops. After weeks of fighting - including one day during which he lost 50000 men - Wolfe reached Montreal and reported his findings to Queen Victoria. On July 25th 1814 he surrendered at Plainsbourg without battle or bloodshed to Napolean Bonaparte who had already taken control of Canada as Emperor of France. This event made Plattsburgh an important military post because it allowed British forces access downriver to Montreal while also giving French forces access upriver into Canada proper (thus enabling them to meet).[1] After Quebec City fell to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815, Canadian Forces withdrew southward along the lower Saint Lawrence River until they reached Kingston where they disbanded on October 15th that year.[2] However, British forces still remained at Quebec City so General James Wolfe sailed back upriver again on December 12th 1815 under cover of darkness[3] near present-day Lewiston before finally surrendering at Fort Erie on January 8th 1646 after three days戦。 This event marks the end of English settlement in North America for about eighty years! plattsburg ny
