Plattsburgh, New York is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-New Rochelle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from an English place name meaning "fortress on the river Platt." The community of Plattsburgh was established in 1814 by Joel Barzun and others as a trading post on the Hudson River. In 1825 it became a town platted by Joshua Barney and others. The town was named for General James Clinton Plattsburgh (1768–1830), who fought with distinction during the War of 1812 and who later served as President US (1829–33). In 1846, when Schuyler County was separated from Albany County, Plattsburgh became one of the five towns within Albany County. The first settlers in what is now Plattsburgh were people from Ulster Province who came overland from Ireland in search of land to settle after their country's independence from Great Britain in 1798. They arrived around 1800 and founded three villages: White Plains, Albionville and East Hampton. These villages were all abandoned by 1802 because there wasn't enough soil to support them. A fourth village called Pleasant Valley was established near present-day downtown Plattsburgh about this time but it too flopped because no one wanted to live there because of the difficult terrain. In 1814 two brothers named Hiram Smith and Amos Green started a small mill which they operated out of their home until they sold it to David Rice in 1830 for $8 per acre ($ ). This mill helped turn around earlyPlattsburgh since it furnished flour for many local families who couldn't get anything else locally due to high prices caused by American inflation at that time ↑↑ It also had some downstream effects on other businesses such as boatbuilding which increased demand for its flour while also creating jobs upstream due to boats being built using local lumber instead of imported wood ↑↑ One can still see remnants of this mill complex today just off Court Street downtown ↑↑ By 1850 Mill Creek had been diverted into what is now Lake Ontario below where the current dam stands ↓↓ .
