The first to try coffee were the Arabs who discovered beans in Sumatra in the 10th century A.D. The Arabs brought this new discovery back to Baghdad where they roasted them and brewed a type of coffee known as qahwa which was used to give rise to two other famous drink brands- Arabica and Robusta. Coffee became popular all over Europe after it started being introduced by traders from Arabia in the 14th century C.E.. It wasn’t until 1564 that someone finally domesticated the coffee bean while growing plants near Vienna, Austria. Coffee beans were then exported to different parts of the world including India, China, Indonesia and Brazil where they were ground into a variety of coffees known as “brazilianos” or “charros” because of their dark coloration. These beans were later sold under various brand names such as Kona, Blue Bottle (now Starbucks), Dutch Bros., Peruvian Porters etc…. In 1847 an Englishman named John Bogle founded what is now called The Bean Company in London with his brother James Bogle. This company became one of the leading importers and marketers of quality whole bean coffees across Europe until its sale to Roquefort SA in 1978….. In 1934 French botanist André Laffitte founded La Cafeterie de Paris with a single baguette from his father-in-law Jules Verne…. La Cafeterie soon became one of France’s most popular roasters becoming one of the top three producers of fine roast coffee along with Peet’s Grocery Co., Brown & Williamson and Stagg Inc…. The Town of Plattsburgh was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1784. In 1814, the United States acquired the land from France for $10 million. By 1850, Plattsburgh had a population of 2,000. In 1872, the Erie Canal was built through town and shipping became more important to Plattsburgh than agriculture. A millinery and dressmaking industry developed during this time; however, it all ceased production by World War II. The community has seen some growth since then and now has a population of over 10,000 people. There are many industries in which Plattsburgh participates including health care services (including clinics run by Community Health Services), technology (including several hospitals and research centers), finance (including two Fortune 500 companies), manufacturing (particularly auto parts and plastics), food processing (poultry operations being one major industry), as well as retail stores and restaurants. Plattsburgh is also home to nearby Lake Ontario National Wildlife Refuge which contains 1/4 mile of shoreline on both sides of the river that allows for great views of the water from nearly every house in town.
In 1764, General John Forbes led an army against the Mohawk tribe in what is now upstate New York. The Battle of Plattsburgh was fought on September 13, 1764, and resulted in a decisive victory for Forbes' forces. The town of Plattsburgh was founded in 1768 by Captain John Dennison. In 1801, the town was consolidated with neighboring Auburn and adopted its current name. The city of Plattsburgh hosted the 1904 Summer Olympics.
