Plattsburgh is a town in upstate New York, United States. The population was 5,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of Plattsburgh-Hilmar borough. The area now comprising Plattsburgh was first settled by the Algonquian people in the late 17th century. In 1814, it became part of New York City as part of thelarger Towns of Kings County and Albany District. The town was incorporated on February 12, 1825, from portions of what were then called Clinton and Schenectady counties. The original name for the town was "Plymouth". On May 25, 1827, it changed its name to "Plattsburgh". In 1839, it experienced its first tornado outbreak when three tornadoes struck within two weeks; all but one killed or injured residents. In 1870–71 the Northern Railroad built an line through Plattsburgh linking it with Canandaigua and Syracuse via Auburn and Rome (now Utica). This railroad helped start a shift in local economic development from agriculture to manufacturing that continues to this day. A new courthouse was completed in 1893 and remains standing today as one of the most important landmarks in Plattsburgh history. In 1899–1900 plumbers John Waddell (of Plainsboro) and James Hickey founded a plumbing company which became Empire Pipe & Supply Co., still extant today as Empire plumbers Incorporated. Between 1916 and 1922 there were three school districts established within Plattsburgh: one for children living east of US Route 9W; one for students living west of US Route 9W; another for students attending schools located north/south of US Route 9W between Hamburg Road and Elmira Road/Route 209A). These school districts are now known as Northampton-Plattstown-Easton Area School District No 1; Westchester-Midtown-Latham Area School District No 2; and Schoharie Valley School District No 3.) In 1926 both Douglass High School (for boys) and Truth Elementary School (for girls) closed because their buildings had not been replaced since they were erected 50 years earlier!
