Stevens founded a salt works here which produced potash and other minerals until 1855. Stevens also built two churches in Plattsburgh: one Congregational (1785) and one Presbyterian (1834). By 1860, over 50% of all plows in upstate New York were made in this region using steam power from the Stevens salt works. The discovery of oil here during World War II led to an rapid growth in manufacturing associated with wartime production needs such as tanks and airplane parts.
