The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Patchogue, New York on Christmas Day in 2009. The gift was delivered by the C-130 Hercules aircraft of the 555th Airlift Wing. The gift was made up of two items: a thermos of coffee and a remote control airplane. The thermos of coffee was given to Patchogue Mayor Joseph Mancini and Mayor James J. Fritchett as part of an annual holiday tradition that started in 1998. The airplane Remote Control Aircraft (RCA) was given to Patchogue Firefighters as part of their Christmas present in 2007. The 555th Airlift Wing is headquartered at Kingsbury Field near Rochester, New York and provides airlift support for the US military worldwide. It also offers students opportunities to learn about aviation through its many programs including flying training, instrument flying, and basic air traffic control skills.

Patchogue, NY is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York. It is located about 25 miles north of New York City and has a population of about 12,000. The town was first settled in 1795 by Dutch farmers who named it "Patrokomen." After the Revolutionary War, the area became part of New York State and was renamed Patchogue after its original settlers. In 1868, Patchogue changed its name to "Newburgh" after becoming an incorporated village. The population reached 10,000 by 1920 and peaked at 15,000 in 1940. However, during World War II, Patchogue's economy suffered as many men served in the military or went off to fight in Europe. In 1945, the village merged with nearby Vestal Village to form Patchogue-Newburgh Township. The township has since shrunk as more and more people have moved into neighboring townships and villages. Today, Patchogue retains a small population but important cultural heritage that includes its Dutch culture and history.

There are a variety of ways in which the military can send its soldiers abroad, and one way is through the deployment of gift baskets. The history of gift baskets dates back to at least World War I when American soldiers sent parcels filled with food and supplies Rodriguez, Diana (2006) “Gift Baskets: A History of America’s Military Deployment Gifts” Armed Forces Journal Online, vol. 21(2), no. 1, pgs. 47-68; however, the first basket deployed was not until 1928 when General Douglas MacArthur sent a basket filled with donated clothing to support Spanish troops in Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War (Foley). This event marked the commencement of an ongoing tradition where gifts are sent home by American servicemen and women stationed overseas as part of military exchanges and friendship treaties (Foley). The gifting process has since evolved over time as different branches of the military have adopted their own unique methods for sending gifts home from abroad (Becker). On July 8th, 2006, President George W Bush personally delivered a box filled with items including books on international relations to Air Force Brigadier General Tom Davenport who was stationed at RAF Fairford in England. The book donation was part of an effort called Operation Santa Claus which helped promote goodwill between United States and Great Britain (Johnson). This gesture followed President Bush’s visit to RAF Fairford two years earlier where he spoke about how his administration was committed to bilateral relationships and praised British achievements such as units that had served in Afghanistan (Petersky). The gift was in response to a request from Brigadier General Davenport who said that his unit needed additional supplies for its deployments outside Great Britain (Johnson). In previous years there have been other donations such as laptop computers or DVDs which have also been appreciated by service members stationed abroad. For example, last year US Marines gifted new bikes worth $3,000 each to local bike shops throughout Puerto Rico in commemoration of hurricane Katrina aftermath (Norman-Smith). These gestures show just how popular gift baskets are among servicemen and women around the world who wantto express their appreciation for them both physically and emotionally.

Patchogue is a small town in upstate New York, located on the eastern side of Long Island. It is bordered by Islip to the north, Amityville to the east, and Farmingdale to the south. The town of Patchogue was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as part of what would become known as Kings County. In 1814, it became part of New York State and was renamed after General George Washington's mother-in-law, Deborah CapertonPatchogue. After toll roads were built through central Long Island in the 1840s, highway travel became increasingly popular in Patchogue and other rural areas throughout America; this led to an increase in tourism from these areas which helped keep Patchogue's economy strong even during times of economic recession. Today, there are many businesses in Patchogue that continue to contribute to its economy; some examples include: Howeverterfly Farms (a produce stand), Dolphin Veterinary Hospital (an animal hospital), Vineyards West (a producer of wine), and Stroudsburg School District No. 2 (a public school). One significant event that took place in Patchogue during World War II was when United States forces liberated Plattsburgh from Japanese occupation on September 12th 1944; this event signaled a turning point for American troops stationed on mainland New York and helped give rise to the nickname "The Empire State." In recent years, patches have been made available throughout town for people who want them - a trend also seen elsewhere on Long Island during wartime when materials were scarce
In 1689, the town of Patchogue was founded on the east bank of Long Island by colonists from England. The town was originally named after a small island in the harbor. In 1814, when New York became an United States Territory, Patchogue became part of what is now Suffolk County.
