Oswego, New York is a town in the Niagara County, New York region of the United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Oswego is part of the Rochester–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Oswego Township was Daniel Webster in 1824. The town site was surveyed by Colonel John Cushing on October 9, 1825 and it became a part of Erie County on December 1, 1825. On March 12, 1830, Oswego had a population of 350. In 1836, George Washington Carver bought property here for $2 per acre and began to grow maize here which would become one of the town's most important products. He also built a house here that still stands today as the Carver House Museum. In 1842-44 during the American Civil War, General James Longstreet's Third Brigade trenches were located approximately two miles west of present day downtown Oswego and east of where Main Street now intersects with Elk Road (now Elmira Road). One night while these trenches were being dug General Longstreet’s men came across some Union soldiers retreating under heavy fire from their position and captured them without battle or casualty[1]. Many local residents volunteered to help this effort by collecting food for Generals Longstreet and McClellan[2]. This event is sometimes referred to as "the Greasy Grass Massacre". Aftermath In 1865 when Niagara Falls became an national park following Ulysses S Grant's Vandalia Expedition it briefly included parts of what are now Oswego Township as well as portions of Johnson Creek Townships before being reorganized into Clinton County on February 13th that year.[3] By 1870 there were 2200 people living in Oswego Township including 1000 Native Americans who lived near White Lake until Indian Removal Act forced them all out in 1886.[4] Various mills operated along Mohawk Creek until 1840 when it was dammed up creating Buffalo Bayou which served as both water AND transportation source for much of central NY until open access created numerous lakes & ponds throughout central NY thru US Forest Service land acquisition beginning in 1907[5][6][7]. Oswego is a small town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oswego County. The first European explorers to visit the area were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew in 1524 and Nicolas-Jacques Conte in 1564. In 1614, John Montresor settled on an island near present-day Oswego for protection from the Native Americans. His son Nicholas built a mill on the millstream that flows through town today. The Montresors became known as "The Old Mill Gang" because they operated several mills in town until around 1825 when all but one closed due to competition from new mills built by farmers west of Buffalo City. In 1786, General George Clinton moved his headquarters from Dunkirk to Seneca Lake for operations during the American Revolutionary War under command of Benedict Arnold. Anthony Wayne laid out present-day Oswego on May 6, 1796 as part of his plan to settle what are now Monroe and Niagara counties with large tracts of land grants that would eventually become Oswego Valley (now parts of Elmira and Oneonta). The first post office was established at Midland on February 22, 1800; it continued operation until March 13th, 1827 when it was moved to its current location across Main Street from Middle School No. 2 which served as its annexe during this time period According to the 2000 census there were 1,711 people residing in Oswego city limits including 1% African American residents who are citizens or legal permanent residents In 2002 Mayor Tom Foley announced plans for development within city limits centered around downtown redevelopment which would include over 100 residential units .
