Ossining, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles east of Albany and 30 miles west of Syracuse. The population was 9,523 at the 2010 census. Ossining is one of the most rural towns in Upstate New York and has been relatively unchanged since it first settled in 1792. Today, Ossining’s economy revolves around farming and tourism; however, its history and culture are still very important to the community. The first settlers in what is now Ossining were farmers who came from England in the early 1700s. They arrived on a ship called "New Albion" and built a cabin near what is now Main Street. Over time, other families followed suit and soon there were over 100 people living here. Farming was the mainstay of their economy until the mid-19th century when new transportation methods began to arrive which led to a more diversified economy. In 1855, John Dolan opened his own grocery store in what was then known as North Ossining. It would be through this store that Dolan became known for his excellent produce and unique items such as cheese and eggs which he sold door-to-door throughout much of Upstate New York. In 1954, Dolan donated land to become Monroe Park; today it is home to several schools, businesses, and residences including The Lodge at Monroe Park Resort & Spa which offers golfing,, swimming pools/spa amenities., tennis courts/recreational facilities., as well as an Olympic size pool with Indoor Soccer Court complex., also named after him,. In 1916, Congress established a permanent Coast Guard Reserve for coastal service and authorized payment of annual dues by state governments to support the force. The original 9 member Coast Guard Cutter squadron consisted of three destroyers (USS Enterprise, USS Hogue, USS Pueblo), six submarines (USS Griggs, USS Kingfisher, USS Porter), two Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) Ships (USCG Sioux City and USCG Mobile) and one Motorboat Battalion (CB-1). Ossining, located in the northcentral Hudson Valley, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in upstate New York. The town was founded in 1764 by colonists from England and has been continuously inhabited since then. Ossining is known for its famous cheese, apples, and wine production, as well as its dramatic cliff-lined streets and river views. The town also has a rich history that can be found buried in its archives and oral histories. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Ossining were farmers who migrated from Great Britain in the early eighteenth century. By 1812, Ossining had a population of 400 people. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel John Nevin as the first mayor of Ossining. From this point forward, Ossining played an important role in American history as a military outpost and manufacturing center. The privately owned mills that were located downtown produced flour, paper products, soap opera fabrics (such as those used on Broadwayitte), ammunition, boots and saddles; however during World War II these businesses were confiscated by the government and their employees drafted into the war effort. Since the late 1800s there have been several attempts to move the village to more central location within Upstate New York but all have failed due to various reasons such as lack of funding or zoning restrictions which continue to remain today. In 2000 Mayor Richard Mestrovich announced his intention to purchase land south of Route 209 for development into a new Village Center which would include a library/community hall/variety store/grill area etc.; however this plan met with opposition from some residents who felt that they had supported him politically while others saw his vision as another example of how out-of-town developers are taking advantage of locals without following through with their promises. In 2002 both Mayor Mestrovich and Legislator Tom Pearce announced plans for an expansion of Central Park that would include housing units along with public open space at one end while renovation work continues on Race Hill Mansion which was once home to Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) before it became property belonging to Central Park Rangers (now NYC Parks). This project received criticism from some residents who felt that it would result in increased traffic congestion around Central Park while others saw it as an opportunity for local businesses to expand their reach beyond just parking lot sales
