Oneonta is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been settled since 1786. It was first known as Onondaga and then as Oneonta. The community of Oneonta was organized on July 1, 1786 by Captain John Montresor and his men during the North American Revolutionary War under the name Gananda (later Onondaga). They were assisted by two other settlers named Nicholaslaus and Johann Georg Weise who had also come from Germany. The original log cabin where many of Oneonta's residents now reside was built in 1787 by Nicholaslaus and Johan Georg Weise for Pastor Andreas Schönbach and family. The first school in Oneonta opened in 1802 with five students from Schenectady County, New York attending daily classes taught by Reverend Michael O'Keefe. In 1811 Two Rivers College (now Utica Community College) moved to its current location on Main Street which became the heart of Oneonta after a fire destroyed much of downtown Utica in 1834. By 1860 about one-third of all Ofeno citizens were employed in agriculture or industry with manufacturing accounting for another third; there was no significant trade or commerce until after World War II when automobiles began to replace horse-drawn traffic on local roads as mainstay economic activity In 1865 an act of Congress designated Oneonta as a seat of government for Chenango County following the move from Rome to Utica by President Andrew Johnson following his inauguration that year.
