The Village had its start in 1792 as a small settlement by Loyalists who fled from America's War for Independence. The first store opened in that year and continued to operate until it burned down in 1865; however, a second store opened soon afterwards and continued to serve until 1903. The Village has two schools: Oneonta High School which serves grades 9-12 (grades one through four are also currently served through alternative programs) and Oneonta Intermediate School which provides instruction up to grade 6th (grades 7-12). There are also several churches associated with Oneonta including First Presbyterian Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church & Parish Hall, St Peter's Episcopal Church & Pastor’s Chapel - all located within walking distance of each other or minutes away by car or public transportation if desired.
